Welcome! I am Stella. My family and I run Thriftyfun. Thriftyfun is a homegrown business, started by my mother and my brothers, and shortly after my sister and I joined in to help. I am so proud to be a part of the Thriftyfun team.

I enjoy being outdoors, dancing, music, travel, and making things. I strive to live a frugal and sustainable life and am always looking for tips to improve. I am a mother of 3 and over the years we have split our time between the Pacific Northwest where I was born and raised and Da Nang, Vietnam, where my husband is from.

A small jar containing hot chocolate mix.

Homemade Hot Chocolate MixThis hot cocoa is chocolaty with a hint of cinnamon. Not only is making your own hot cocoa mix delicious, but it can make a great gift for the holidays. My friend is a chef and he had to make special hot chocolate mixes each year for the hotel attached to the restaurant he worked at. We based this recipe on one of his favorites. This is also quite inexpensive.

Halloween Saltine Toffee

Halloween Saltine ToffeeThis saltine toffee is just the sugar bomb you need for Halloween. It is easy to make and is a great gift. This version is made with white chocolate, but you can use any type of chocolate chips you like.

Washing a Sunbeam Heated Blanket - blue and white heated throw

Washing a Sunbeam Heated BlanketI received a heated throw for Christmas and recently my kids spilled some food on it. I assumed that all I could do was wipe it with a damp cloth, but it turns out you can wash them! You do need to be careful when washing and drying and you can not wash as you would a regular blanket.

The clipboard gallery wall.

Clipboard Gallery WallIf your kid is anything like mine, there is a slew of artwork being made each day. I wanted a way to display my child's art in a way that could be easily changed. This is the solution I came up with. I wanted to be able to have both verticle and horizontal pieces of art, so I got two sizes of clipboards so that art would be contained within the parameters of the clipboard. I added some patterned contact paper to some of the clipboards to add interest and also painted the clips black to match. In retrospect, I don't think the contact paper was needed, as I am sure these will always be full.

Now Is the Time for a Victory Garden - raised beds with leaf lettuce and other crops

Now Is the Time for a Victory GardenWith all the extra time spent at home and uncertainty with COVID-19, now is the perfect time to be planting a victory garden.

A bowl of Instant Pot Lemongrass Chicken (Ga Kho Sa)

Instant Pot Lemongrass Chicken (Ga Kho Sa)This is one of my family's favorite recipes. The meat comes out tender and fragrant. As a note, I use heaping tablespoon measurements for the garlic, shallots and lemongrass. My husband loves chicken with bones and my kids like boneless so I do half and half for this recipe. If you don't add bones, I would add a tablespoon of Better Than Bouillon chicken broth.
