A Cure for Hiccups?

Well, I don't have the hiccups at the moment, so I can't say if this will work or not. If anyone else has some cures, feel free to post them. This is pretty simple and safe so it's worth a try the next time you get the hiccups.

- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 1 cup warm water

Mix together and drink. Sure beats having someone try to scare them out of you, if it works. :-)

I have tried this many time and it has worked every time. Take a large zip of water bend over forward (your forehead facing the front on your knees/legs, or if you are sitting down head between your legs) and swallow, repeat a couple of times if needed.

I've heard that a spoonful of sugar works, but a spoonful of peanut butter is what I always use. My kids love making their hiccups go away with this too! (08/25/2004)

Many years ago I was in a bar with the hiccups and the bartender gave me a shot of lemon juice. Much to my amazement it worked. My kids and I still use this method. (08/25/2004)

I used to get the hiccups all the time growing up. What worked every time was drinking water from the far side of the cup. Basically, in order to do so, you have to lean forward and drink with your head almost upside down. It didn't take much water, but it did require a little coordination! For some reason, it cured my hiccups right away. (08/26/2004)

There is an acupuncture point (nerve ending) called LI 10 on the arm just down from the elbow. You should look it up on an acupuncture chart for the exact spot. If you rub this point hard toward the hand it will alleviate hiccups every time. (08/26/2004)

Here's one I know you haven't used but works for me- Hold your breath, turn up your face to the sky and think about a cow in a swimsuit. There now isn't that the most ridiculous suggestion in the world! The sheer stupidity of this thought when I have the hiccups stops them dead. Strange but true. Just like me ;) (08/26/2004)

Peanut Butter for Hiccups

I am 55 years old and have always had hiccups quite often. My mom also used to have them when she was younger. She's had them so bad that she actually had to be sedated once when she had them for several days. We both have tried every remedy we had ever heard of; head between our legs, breathing into a paper bag, taking sips from the outer edge of a glass, a spoonful of sugar, etc. but all to no avail.

I once hiccuped as I was taking in a bit of sugar and it went down the wrong way. Another problem and it still didn't help with the hiccups, until I heard of the peanut butter cure. All you have to do is eat a heaping spoonful of peanut butter; creamy works better than smooth. It will stop a hiccup midway. I have a separate jar of peanut butter in the pantry that my husband knows better than to touch, if he values his life.

Ha! It is my "medicinal purpose" jar of Peanut Butter and it has never failed me, or anyone else that I've told about the "cure". When I worked, I kept a jar in my desk drawer. Hope this helps.

A Cure for Hiccups?

Many years ago I had a 6th grade teacher who used the 'scare' method and it always worked. I wondered for years how that could possibly work and it finally dawned on me, the only way is if hiccups were mentally triggered.

I started playing with this idea and found I could cure my own hiccups in seconds by simply relaxing and regulating my breathing while contemplating the absurdity of having hiccups. I'd mentally fuss at myself for having lost control of my body, then concentrate on regaining that control.

Once I had practiced this a few times they would stop almost as soon as I began the process. Since then I almost never have hiccups, but when they occur I close my eyes and do this for about 15 - 30 seconds, and they're gone. Give this a try; such a mental victory feels great. Be patient at first as it may take somewhat longer until you've done it a few times. (09/06/2004)

Recently I had a bout with hiccups before going to bed (that's what I get for eating in bed) and I read somewhere about focusing on the next hiccup coming and it wouldn't come. Well I did, and it didn't. This has worked twice for me! (09/06/2004)

Just think about the last time you saw that white horse. Most people get hung up on "what horse? what are you talking about?" and they don't think about the hiccups and they go away. People will look at you like you are an idiot when you say that phrase to them, but then they are quite amazed when it works. (09/17/2004)

If you have a strong friend, have them hold you upside down by your ankles for 1 minute. It works. I have tried the drinking water, sugar, peanut butter, none of that works for me. I did also fine that holding your breathe like someone else mentioned really does work. Hold it till you can't anymore, they are gone. (12/22/2004)

Hiccup Remedy

Many years ago I was at work and had the hiccups. A co-worker got a paper towel and glass of water and told me to drink the water THROUGH the paper towel. It really works and I have used that hint ever since. Only takes a few sips to work. Try it next time.

This cure, which has always worked for me, I learned at a church retreat.

Get a cup of water, then lean over a sink or some other place it will be okay to spill a little water, and drink from the opposite side (opposite from normal) of the cup. This ALWAYS works. Kind of like the hint already posted to get a mouthful of and then lean over and swallow. (01/25/2005)

To cure hiccups, simply hold your hands over your ears as tightly as you can without hurting them, and drink from a water fountain/sink for as long as you can without suffocating. The hiccups are gone immediately, and the only thing you need is water. (01/26/2005)

wow - lots of tips, my mother is a nurse, so she is explained the how/why of hiccups and the best (easy) way to get rid of them. Get a big glass of water and drink as much as you can with out breathing through your nose. Just drink drink drink, no breathing, and presto, all gone. I like some of the other tips, but they just aren't practical. Pickle juice? what if you are at work? Or being held upside down? I bet they work, but I like the easier one. Enjoy

The sugar thing works. I usually have my daughter suck on, not chew a sugar cube. A teaspoon or two of sugar works too but you need to suck on it til it gradually dissolves. Works for my daughter every time. (03/14/2005)

This is a trick that I learned in college and I have passed it onto many other people with great success. Take a glass of water and put in a butter knife. Drink the water all at once, with the knife flat on your forehead (while it is still in the glass).

I believe this works because it forces you to tilt your head back as you are drinking. I have never had this trick fail.
