Seriously crisp top. The tricks to a firm but moist bottom layer, and a dry, crispy top are to cut the apples in eighths, and use very cold bits of butter on top. Don't mix any of it once in the pan.
Ad

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 cups peeled, thickly sliced, firm apples.
  • 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup quick or regular oatmeal
  • 3/4 cup dark or light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup (1 to 1 1/2 sticks) very cold butter, plus extra to grease the pan.
  • lemon juice or fruit fresh

Directions:

Butter an 8 inch square baking pan.

In a medium bowl mix flour, oatmeal, sugar and spices. Set aside.

In a large bowl toss apples with lemon juice or Fruit Fresh. Pour apples into buttered pan.

Top apples evenly with dry mixture. Don't mix. Top evenly with bits of cold butter. Again, don't mix.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 to 45 minutes or until golden.

Note: Can be doubled, chopped pecans or walnuts can be added to the dry topping.

This is not your typical Apple Crisp recipe. There are no oats or brown sugar. Just pure, simple, deliciousness. This recipe has been handed down through the generations in my family.

Ingredients:

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9x9 baking pan. Add the apple slices to the pan. In a bowl, combine the water with the cinnamon, pour the mixture over the apples. In a small bowl using pastry cutter or finger tips, combine sugar, flour and butter together until it's crumbly.

Ad

Sprinkle crumbs on top of apples and bake 30-40 minutes, or until pudding is light brown in color.

What I love about this recipe is the burst of orange in an otherwise delicious apple desert. The cardamom marries well with the cinnamon. Feel free to play with the ingredients. I did and was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. It is also very festive for the coming holiday. Enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup white flour
  • 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup soft butter
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 tsp. cardamom
  • 1/4 cup coconut
  • 1/8 cup dried orange cranberries
  • 1/8 cup chopped dates
  • 4 large apples, peeled and sliced

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Blend flour, cinnamon, oatmeal, brown sugar, cardamom then blend in softened butter until crumbly consistency.

Ad

Mix the apples, dates, coconut and dried orange cranberries together and place in the bottom of 8 inch round or square baking pan. Sprinkle topping over apple mixture.

Bake uncovered for 30-60 minutes depending on oven size and desired doneness of apples you like.

I like to have some texture to the apples so I use my little toaster oven for 40 minutes.

For an extremely easy and fast apple crisp type desert I pour a couple cans apple pie filling in a 9x13 baking dish and sprinkle one boxed yellow or white cake mix over fruit. Then melt one stick butter or margarine and drizzle over dry mix. Bake in a 400 oven for like 30-45 min. Or until top is golden brown and slightly crunchy...yum. I also do this with other fruit. And like to mix fruits also like 1 can cherry pie filling with 1 can crushed pineapple or 1 bag frozen patches 1 bag frozen blueberrys.

Apple Crisp

Kitty Lover, I'd think you could use any of the recipes with canned pie filling. I would cut the amount of sugar in half because the apples because they are presweetened.

Recipe for Apple Crisp Using Canned Pie Filling
