Beautiful Red Marsh Mallow (Hibiscus Coccineus)

Photo Description
I neglected this plant for several years by keeping it in a small pot with poor soil. It never bloomed. Last year I moved it to a larger pot with rich soil. As you can see, the plant is showing its appreciation.

This flower is Hibiscus coccineus of the Mallow family. It is a long lived perennial. It's foliage and stems die back to the ground late Fall and new growth emerges mid/late Spring.

It is easily grown from seed. It's natural habitat ranges from VA to FL to TX. It is often found growing by the roadside and prefers wet or marshy areas. The mature height is from 3 to 6 feet. Bloom time is from mid Summer to early Fall.

I raised the one shown here from seed and keep it in a pot above ground year round. It requires no special care, just a roomy pot, well amended soil, plenty of water and average sunlight.

The flower has several common names including Texas Star Hibiscus. The plant was introduced to me as Maple Leaf Hibiscus and I prefer that name. Actually, its leaves resemble those of Cannabis Sativa more than those of Maple.
