BetterBoy Or TallBoy Tomatoes?

Photo Description
These are BetterBoy tomatoes being grown in 5 gal. buckets. Silly me, after pulling all the ripe ones, I think of taking a picture. There are tomatoes at 5 ft., 6 ft., 7 ft., and 8 ft. At 9 and 9½ ft. there are blooms.

BetterBoy is an indeterminate tomato, meaning it doesn't stop growing at a determined height. It will continue growing til frost and this is just August 05. Golly, things grow bigger and better around here. And this ain't even Texas.

Guess I'll need a step ladder.

I didn't know BetterBoy was a 'tree tomato'.

PS

Hope to have a better camera, soon.

I never tried growing them in 5 gallon buckets but may do it next year. I'm having a real problem with the crows getting them in the garden. I have to pull them when they start turning yellow and set them out to ripen.

Looks like you have your plant under a tree. Is it getting much sun there? Also, I would like to know how you stake your tomatoes. I have a hard time doing that.

Litter Gitter

The plants did get a little dappled shade for just part of the day. Now, they've grown past that limb and get full sun (at least at the top).

When I saw how tall the plants were getting, I went to Lowe's and got some 5 ft. - 3/4 inch plastic conduit ($1,49 ea - will last many years). I stuck them in the buckets alongside the plants. When the plants outgrew the 5 ft. pieces, I went back and got more conduit and couplings (35 cents ea). I cut the conduit in half and coupled the halves to the conduit already in place.

(Now, the plants have grown past this 7 1/2 stake!

Next year, I will screw a 5 ft conduit to the inside wall of the bucket before I plant my tomatoes. Then I will couple another 5 ft conduit to that. Surely, the tomatoes wont grow past a 10 ft stake.

Usually, I use something a little more aesthetically pleasing to tie my tomatoes. This year, I tore old cloth into strips. It does look sorta shabby. To get a really straight plant, you have to start early and tie as the plant grows. The ties will have to be rather close together.
