It's difficult to say without knowing more information about his likes or dislikes, but I would get him something that relates to a hobby or passion of his. Think about what you liked best about the presents he has gotten you in the past and it may help you decide what to get him. You are already doing the surprise party so that is going to mean a lot to him.
