This is a great cold weather meal that is very hearty and filling.

Total Time: 110 minutes

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 can lima beans ($.99)
  • 1 can pork & beans ($1.19)
  • 1 can kidney beans ($.99)
  • 1 lb hamburger ($3.00)
  • 1 onion, minced ($.49)
  • 1 lb bacon ($3.40)
  • 1 cup ketchup ($.40)
  • 1 cup brown sugar ($pennies)
  • 4 Tbsp vinegar ($pennies)
  • 4 tsp Worcestershire sauce ($pennies)

Steps:

  1. Brown and crumble bacon.
  2. Cook onions and hamburger until done. Add beans.
  3. Mix all ingredients for sauce and pour over top of bean mixture.
  4. May be made in crock pot on high. Leave all day while you are working or bake 1 1/2 hours at 350.

Drain 1/2 of the liquid off the lima and kidney beans. Place all three types of beans in a baking dish. In a skillet brown the hamburger and bacon. Drain the grease.

Brown hamburger and onion and drain fat. Brown bacon and drain fat. Mix with beans, ketchup, sugar, vinegar and liquid smoke.

Bake in crock pot 4-9 hours starting on high to cook the shortest amount of time and low if taking longer to cook.

Place bacon in 3 qt. microwave dish. Microwave for 4-5 minutes or until crisp. Remove bacon and add onion. Saute' onion in bacon drippings for 3 minutes. Combine remaining ingredients with onion, mixing lightly.

Cook onion and garlic in 1 Tbsp. shortening until tender. Add balance of ingredients and mix. Turn into 1 1/2 qt. casserole.
