Check for Spoiled Food Due to a Power Outage

Gold Post Medal for All Time! 677 Posts

A coin in an ice cube tray inside a freezer.Always keep a quarter on top of a frozen ice cube tray. If the quarter has sunk to the bottom, you know the things in the freezer thawed and refroze during a power outage and are not safe to eat. This tip is especially useful if you were away from home on vacation for a few days or more.

This is a great tip!! Thanks for sharing.

If your freezer is not full of food items...and you have empty spaces, it is good to fill those spaces with plastic jugs filled with water tucked in those empty spaces. I use clean plastic juice bottles or even the round plastic ice cream containers with good lids (whatever will fit into that empty space).

This can give your frozen items a little extra "keep time" as they stay cold for a while after the power is off.

That said, my motto is always SAFETY FIRST, so if things appear to have been defrosted and refrozen, better safe and toss than sorry.

Thanks for sharing your tip!
