How do you clean smudges off of family pictures?

Use a lens cloth and rub rub rub
I am an avid scrapbooker and we clean smudges off with a piece of flannel. Any scrap piece of flannel will do.

My MIL had a house fire quite a few years ago and she pulled out some photos recently that had some soot on them (not a lot, just a little stained). I was just wondering if anyone knows a way to get soot out of regular photos? Thanks!
