Crochet Jellybean Duck

This cute duck is fun for Easter or for anytime. She is crocheted with 4 ply yarn, with a drawstring under her tail. Fill her with jellybeans, and when you squeeze her tummy, she lays "jellybean eggs".

Approximate Time:

Supplies:

  • aluminum hook size G
  • 4 ply yarn (white or yellow for body)
  • small amount of 4 ply orange for beak
  • 7MM sew on eyes
  • 3 inch straw hat
  • small silk flowers and ribbon for hat trim
  • Optional: hot glue gun

Instructions:

Note: To make the popcorn st, begin as for DC, but after drawing first loop through st, begin as for DC again. Repeat until you have started 4DC, then wrap yarn and pull through all loops. Always make ch 1 between popcorn sts.

Head:

Chain 5. Join to form a circle.

1st Round: Ch 2 (This will be first st of first popcorn.) Complete first popcorn, ch 1. Repeat 3 times. (4 popcorn sts with ch 1 between each). Join to top of first st with sl st.

2nd Round: Make 2 popcorn, ch 1 over ch1 sts between popcorn in previous round. Join with sl st. 8 popcorns.

3rd Round: *Make 1 popcorn, ch 1 between each of first 3 popcorns. Make 2 popcorns between next 2 popcorns. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st. 10 popcorns.

4th Round: 1 popcorn,ch 1 in each st around. Join with sl st 10 popcorns.

5th Round: Repeat 4th round. Join with sl st . 10 popcorns.

6th Round: Repeat 4th round. Join and fasten off, leaving yarn end long enough to close up head. Stuff with polyester filling and draw up tightly to close hole. Fasten.

Beak: Ch 2.Make 7 sc in first ch. Do not join rounds. Working 1 sc in each sc around, Continue for 25 sts. Fasten off, leaving enough yarn to sew beak to head. Sew beak over 1st round of head. (4 Popcorns)

Body:

Repeat as for head through the 2nd round.

3rd Round: *Make 1 popcorn in 1st st, 2 popcorn in next st. Repeat from * around. Join. 12 popcorns.

4th Round *Make 1 popcorn in each of first 3 sts, 2 popcorn in next st. Repeat from * around. Join. 15 popcorns.

5th Round: Repeat rnd 4. 18 popcorns

6th Round: Repeat rnd 4. 22 popcorns.

7th Round: Make 1 popcorn in each st around. 22 popcorns.

8th, 9th, and 10th Rounds: Repeat round 7. 22 popcorns

11th Round: Make 2 dc in each ch 1 between popcorns. Join.

12th Round: ch 2, dc in each dc around. Join. Fasten off.

Tail:

Row 1: Insert hook between any 2 popcorns in the 10th row.(This is the last row of popcorns on the body piece.) Ch 2, make 2 dc in each of next 6 popcorns; 1 dc in next popcorn. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 2, 1 dc in each dc across. Turn.

Row 3: Repeat row 2 of the tail. Fold tail piece matching up beginning of row with end of row. Sl st into top of Ch 2 at beginning of row. pull stitch tight and fasten off.

Drawstring:

Chain 100 stitches. Fasten off. Tie a knot in one end. Weave through last row of dc on body, and tie a knot in the other end. Using the photo as a guide, sew head in place. Sew eyes into place. Trim bonnet with ribbon and small silk flowers, and tie or glue in place on head. Fill the body with Jellybeans and draw up the drawstring, leaving a large enough opening to dispense jellybeans. Tie in a bow.
