Cutting Down One of Two Apple Trees?

We have two apple trees in our back yard. This year we have so many apples and we do not eat them. We were thinking of cutting down one tree, but would the mate survive after 40 years?

You need to have two apple trees for them to produce fruit.

Jodie is right-apple trees (and most other fruiting plants) need a mate to pollinate and produce fruit.

Since you have two 40 year olds that are producing bumper crops, have you thought about sharing the wealth? You could donate the excess to food banks, homeless shelters, senior citizen groups, Girl Guides (Scouts) to learn preserving.

The possibilities are endless, heck, you could put a bushel basket at the end of your drive and stick a sign on it-"Free to good home!"

You do need two trees. Please share them round- you are so lucky to have such bounty. And don't the birds help you eat them?

Not true. You need to have two trees that bloom at the same time if you want an abundance. If there is an apple tree nearby, within a half mile, that blooms at the same time, you'll be fine.

Why not give apples away?

Wish you were my neighbor! :-) Ask around, any home canner would be thrilled to come and pick them for you!
