Dog Has Black Smelly Deposit in Ears?

I have a 2 year old black Lab Golden Retriever mix and she has this stuff in her ears that is black and smells bad. I tried to clean them with this stuff called Clean Ears and also put 2 different kinds of drops in them. It works for a day or 2, but then the smell comes back. She also scratches them a lot and now the pink part is starting to turn scaly and red. Sometimes the insides of her ears bleed! I cannot afford to take her to the vet, as vets around here cost too much. What is wrong with her and what can I do for this to make it go away?

Golden Retrievers are one of the breeds prone to ear infections & the symptoms you mention are all symptoms. I personally would recommend you contact your vet to have the poor dog's ears checked before it gets too far out of hand.

More than likely its yeast or fungus infection. I have begun using EcoEars on my dog to clean his ears and he hasnt had an infection or build up since. Its been over 4 yrs.

If you are certain its a yeast infection, black, smelly tar like discharge is a symptom, the generic equivelant to Monostadt 7 is the best remedy. But, if the dog also has a bacterial infection, the dog will need antibiotic drops and an oral antibiotic would be a good idea also.

It does sound like an ear infection, which can be from fungus or bacteria or both. If it is not treated effectively is can result in much pain for your dog, along with loss of hearing or inner ear damage leaving the dog in a state of constant dizzyness for the remainder of its life. At that point you would have no choice but to have your dog euthanized. You cannot afford not to treat this.

Look for a local Vet who will take payments, or has a fund for those who cannot afford treatment. There are several in my area. If you cannot find treatment, take your dog to a local rescue or shelter where it can get treatment. It is sad to not be able to afford a pet, but there are many in that situation these days. It is illegal not to treat a sick pet.

Really that is not nice to say. The amount that most vets charge makes it almost impossible to take to a vet. A real vet that really loves animals and is working for the animals will help you out. Dizziness caused by things happening in the ears is called vertigo and do you suggest a person with this get euthanized? There are solutions.

It is not illegal. You just made that up! Show me where it shows us its illegal to not treat a sick pet that is not livestock.

Wow!! That sounds on the rude side. (One of my golden's was 12 yrs old when I got laid off from my well paying 16 year job) So try to understand some people do have situations that arise. I understand this question is a few years old, but if anyone reading this has this problem there are home remedies you can try.

Please watch Dr Andrew Jones on YouTube. He is absolutely amazing and the home remedy he has did work on my dog.

It depends on the state laws. Here is an article about it.

Absolutely ridiculous for advice to an individual that CANNOT afford to take their pet to the vet and able to treat an ear infection to advise to just have the animal put down or euthanized!!!! I have never read anything so INSANE to advise such a drastic measure for a simple problem....hey how about advising that if they cannot afford a vet to try using apple cider vinegar as it may be as simple as ear mites or a yeast but to even think to advise to put the animal down....what a Dumbass!!!

that is a chronic ear infection. need to clean with organic apple cider vinegar and water. mix 1/2 and 1/2 and apply 10 drops in each ear. massage up and down the back of ear to spread it and then let her shake it out.

wipe out anything with cotton ball or kleenix. never use paper towel as it's too rough. do this 2x a day till gone. if it's not cleared up after 2 weeks then go to the vet.

You must take your dog to the vet. Sounds like an ear infection. My shelties used to get them all the time. If you have a pet you have to be a responsible pet owner and provide necessary veterinary care!

Ear mites. She must go to the vet. The ear mite medicine at the stores don't work.

I can see that this question was from 2013 but I have just come across it.
Surolan is an ear drop for dogs which treats yeast, bacterial, mites and takes down inflammation. Two drops in the affected ear twice a day until the ear is relieved of all problems.

This can be purchased with no prescription off eBay and Amazon. Surolan. However, if problems do persist then a vet is the only option x

Also, please do not listen to some people who seem to be very rude about how much money someone has and suggesting euthanizing a dog over a yeast infection in the ear is not reasonable. Thank you and I hope everything worked out for you & your dog.

You can clean her ears with one part warm water one part apple cider vinager. (Antibacterial ) then smooth a small amount of vasoline in her ears everyday ..the cidar will kill bacteria and the vasoline or antibiotic ointment will protect and heal her skin also u will see it loosen over time and be able to wipe with a cotton ball.
