In regards to your tip about putting flashlight batteries in backwards to prevent accidental discharge, many designs of flashlights will allow them to operate even if both batteries are reversed. Also, even one battery reversed will allow discharge if accidentally switched on.

Before you have a power outage or a Tornado Warning, buy several disposable lights at the dollar store. It's easiest to find them in the Fall, right before Halloween. They are great for kids (and adults) because they easily clip on to a book or to your coat or shirt.

| Preparing For A Winter Power Outage

 Our family recently survived a lengthy power outage after a major ice storm. We really did not find it that difficult to do, in part because we were prepared ahead of time. However, some of our neighbors who were not prepared ended up staying at a hotel for several nights, at the tune of $65 per night.

When we have a power outage, I bring in 2 or 3 of my solar lights from the garden. They are much safer than candles and can be recharged so they are always ready for use.

| Be Prepared For A Kitchen Fire
|
It has been three years ago this month I had a kitchen fire and panicked. When the fire got out of hand, all I could think about was calling 911 and getting my dog and myself out of the house. We had extensive fire damage to the kitchen and extensive smoke damage to the entire house. We were out of our house for three months.
