Marking the Date Purchased on Food
When I return from grocery shopping, I use a sharpie marker and write the date on the outside of such items as eggs, salad dressings and mayonnaise. That way as my week progresses, I know what is the oldest and what really needs to get used up.

The Value of Clear Glass Cannisters
I have heavy square glass canisters with tight-fitting lids that I store dried ingredients (elbow macaroni, rice, beans, etc.) in on the countertop. The glass lets me see the level of these products so I know when to add that item to the grocery list. When I refill these containers...

Storing Baking Powder
Don't keep baking powder for more than one year, as it loses its potency. To check whether your baking powder is still usable, add 1 teaspoon of it to 1/3 cup of hot tap water. The mixture should bubble vigorously. By Joesgirl

Have Food Backups In The Pantry
To make sure I always have a back up of certain items I try to buy two of them when I can and then put the extra into the pantry area and forget about it. When I can't spend too much on groceries for some reason. Like an unexpected car expense, a birthday or a bill that was forgotten I always have the extra items I can count on. By RoseMary

Stocking Up - Storing Dry Goods
Living in the country we try to keep a ready supply of food, especially when winter's coming. For more space to store foods we use new 5 gallon paint buckets cleaned and dried really well, then store our sugar, flour, oatmeal, dry milk, rice etc. in these stored under our raised bed. We add in about 5 oxygen pads for longer storage. By Melanie

Stocking Up On Food Pays Off During Hard Times
Here's another grocery tip. When the Y2K scare was going on we decided to go ahead and stock up on dry products and other items that might be needed. Even though nothing came of it we kept from getting into those items. Later that year my husband got laid off from his job and could not find work. In a small town it's very hard to steady work. Boy, were we thankful for the stockpile of stuff we had.

Milk Jugs for Dry Storage
Don't cut up your plastic milk jugs! I wash them out and then use them for storage. It's much easier to pour powdered milk from the plastic jug than the large cardboard boxes and I can see how much I have left. Prevents running out when I need it for a recipe. I also use the jugs to store dried beans that I buy in bulk (cheaper), elbow macaroni, sugar, flour, and corn meal.. The handle really makes the jobs easier. By Lisa
