Getting Dog to Use Training Pads

How do I get a 6 weeks old Stafe to use her training mats, as she's too young to go outside? She hasn't had her jabs yet.

You need to tell her in a happy voice "let's go potty" and put her on the pad. If she sits there and does nothing it is OK. If she does her business, it is great and clapping and hurrays are in order. If the pup starts to pee on the carpet as pups do because they can't hold it long, pick her up in mid stream and take her to the potty pad saying "lets go potty". The important thing is to really praise her.

The high tech thing to do would be to buy a two dollar clicker at Petsmart and load it by clicking and dropping hot dog pieces the size of a green pea on the floor.

When she gets on the potty pad, then click and throw a piece of food. As she walks to get to the potty pad, and just gets her feet on it, then click and throw the hot dog piece. While using the cue word after she gets used to going to the potty pad. It might take about twenty loads of the clicker to get her to understand that the clicker means a high value treat. After a while you will be able to say let's go potty and she will go to the potty pad. Hopefully, still the click and treat is a good way to teach things.

Also, after eating, napping, running, chewing a bone, or just anything every so often (time her pees for a day and you will know how often she needs to go), put her on the potty pad. If you are using a clicker, click after she is through going potty and praise her really a lot! You can say yes, or good dog, just make it seem like this is the greatest thing in the world because it is! (02/05/2010)
