Getting Rid of Gnats

I have tiny gnats that are flying all over my house. I have cleaned and scrubbed and tried to find anything that might be the source of them. Does anyone know what will make them come? What will make them go away? Thanks.

If you're talking about the tiny, black, biting bugs in FL (sometimes called Noseeums or Sand fleas), Raid flea spray kills them instantly. It comes in a purple can. I found this out by accident when I was spraying my dogs bed after his bath. It's a light carpet, and I found those little critters lying dead all over it.

They come in the house because they are small enough to come through the screen. They have a couple of seasons of the year that they come around. It's quite impossible to keep them out of the house unless you never open your doors. (06/16/2008)

I had the same problem. They come out of the drains. They feed on the waste inside drain pipes. I started putting half cup of baking soda and half cup of vinegar in each drain to kill them off at the source. I also leave out some cut up water bottles or other plastic bottle bottoms with left over fruit like banana, apple, or peach floating in apple cider vinegar and a drop or two of dishsoap in it. They are worse in the summer months. Good luck. (06/17/2008)

I have the same problem. I have a ferret that I give fruit to and have water dishes for her and the 2 cats in the house. My sister told me to use lavender oil. They hate that nice smell. I put it on my cat and got rid of his fleas, too.

I put some on cotton balls all over the house. I also wiped it around the edge of the food and water dishes and poured it down the drains, too.

It is 100% all natural and safe for all pets and people. The gnats only like things that are wet and/or rotten. Things that put off a vinegar smell. So vinegar won't work.
Good luck. (06/24/2008)

I'm usually a clean person, but I had gotten lazy and let my sink pile up with dishes and got gnats for the first time ever which drove me nuts. I thought it was so disgusting, so I got bleach and mixed it with water. I cleaned the kitchen including the sink and counters and drains with bleach/water for 3 days and they were gone. (I used a spray bottle.) I found some wandering around my bread box and cupboard, I made sure everything was sealed and I wiped everything down with bleach/water. They are gone and there was a bunch. To get rid of those nasty black gnats, I used several small water bottles and cut their tops off.
I added some water, a little balsamic vinegar, some honey and a little left over wine or beer and fill this mixture half way in the bottles. Then I took the tops that I cut off and loaded them up with some dish soap on both sides and then placed them upside down on the openings of each of the bottles. This is so they go in and stay in. So far I must of caught hundreds of the nasty things in each of the bottles by the next morning. Then I flush then down the toilet. Wash out the bottles with hot water and start all over again.

Another solution I did was I took the idea from one of the other posts with the alcohol in the spray bottle. I switched it up with some wintergreen rubbing alcohol instead, it smells better then the regular one. I put a sprayer on top of it, then I start to spray the ones on the walls. Then I made some small traps with the solution above and put it into small plastic fruit cups, waited for about an hour until I see a mass of them on and around the cups and start to spray, they drop and seem to die almost instantly.

Then I take a paper towel and clean them up and put in the garbage outside right away.

I set little applesauce cups half full of ammonia. (In high places of course, people with children, refrigerator, top of cabinet, etc.). All gnats are gone within 1 or 2 days. (07/30/2008)

After you catch them, put the container in the freezer for over 3 minutes. They die.

If you have fruit flies instead of gnats you can catch them by putting wax paper over the top of a container with bait inside. I used smashed banana and a drop of vinegar. (10/06/2008)

A cup of orange juice. It won't kill them, but gets their attention pretty quick. When you've caught a good amount, cap it and dump outside somewhere. Repeat til' their gone. (10/13/2008)

I tried the cider vinegar in the bowl trick and it caught a lot of them, but the thing that finally got rid of them was the simplest solution. I poured a big pot of boiling water down my two kitchen sink drains twice a day for a week. I also kept the drains sealed with those little rubber drain stoppers 24/7 unless I was using the sink for something. I am pleased to say they are gone. We had such a bad swarm that I was very close to calling an exterminator. Try boiling water. It worked for me. (12/20/2008)
