I would contact the Dept. of Education in your town and ask if they have on line courses you could take to obtain a GED. In any case I would contact them and and explain you goal and ask them for help. You could also visit a education counselor at your high school and enlist them in your goal.

If you qualify to get help from the government/state, etc. You can probably do it for free online through a local community college. Otherwise, my guess it that you'll have to pay.

As far as I know, you cannot get a "free" GED. However, if you are talking about taking the GED classes, those are offered at your community college and may or may not be free. To get the GED, you have to take a test. There is a test registration fee; in Maryland it is $35. Study guides can be checked out of the public library and found on the website of your state's GED office, and if you are a self-directed student, there is no need to take a class at the community college.

However, if you have to retake parts of the GED, a new application fee will be required. In Maryland, the GED is administered by the Department of Labor and Licensing. The test itself is administered at various sites around the state, and there are limited spaces available, so you may have to wait in order to get a particular site. After you fill out the application and mail in your fees, you will have to wait at least a month for processing and the available date/location. After you take the test, it will be another 6 weeks before the results are mailed to you - at least in Maryland.
