Hair Damaged By Perm

I used Gentle Treatment perm on my hair and my hair is falling out very badly. I believe it is over-processed or the product was too strong. I deep condition it weekly and I put pink lotion to moisten it 3-4 times a week, but it is still coming out a lot. Luckily, I have thick and long hair. What can I do? I'm in dire need of help.

Baby oil might help your hair. I use to put some on my hair at night then wash it the next day. You can also use a wig till your hair gets back to normal. Look on line for wigs on sale, good luck. (01/12/2010)

A side note on perms. If you take medicines, "do not" get a perm. I have lost most of my hair due to not knowing better when I was younger. GG Vi (01/15/2010)

I went through a similar experience when I had a highlight touch-up done and the hairdresser overlapped the bleach on my long, extremely fine hair. (Fine hair breaks easily anyway). My hair started falling out within days. I tried many things, but I found one thing that really did help long term, Fructis Length and Strength 3 minute conditioner (the cream one in a jar). It costs like $4 or so. I used it every time I shampooed.

The other thing I did was I bought a wig and stopped styling what was left of my hair. My new hairdresser looked at my hair and said, "We need to just cut all this off, it's melted, but I refused and wouldn't let her". It had taken me three years to grow it. I'm happy to report I still have most of it. I lost the blonde streaks, but saved the rest and now it's half way down my back and really healthy. I also did night conditioning, I would put that conditioner on my hair once or twice a week, put a shower cap over it and sleep in it all night if I didn't have to work the next day.

Condition, condition, condition and try not to style your hair and you may be able to save some of it. For going out, I would either wear a wig or I would pull what was left of my hair back and clip a fake pony tail over it. I did that for a year and a half until my hair began to really recover. Hope this helps you. God bless you, that's a tough thing to deal with. (01/15/2010)

I have been a hair dresser for over 40 years, when getting a shop perm, if the gal/guy forgets to use the neutralizer, take peroxide and run it through the hair, that will neutralize the perm. If they have dried your hair, then remember that they did not use neutralizer then use a hot pack of olive oil, leave that on for about a half hour, there is nothing like olive oil. Quantum conditioners are also very good.

Also if you have very thin hair, a perm will only damage the hair, if you feel like you want a perm, only leave the perm on for 1 - 2 minutes. Thin hair has no madula, which is the center of the hair shaft, the perm must be checked every 30 seconds. Hair will go into a good curl at this point, if it is not checked, it will go out of the curl, then start frizzing. Also the hair must be wrapped in water first, then the solution applied, checked every 30 seconds, then rinsed for 5 minutes.

Also, many beauticians believe that the neutralizer must stay on the hair 10 minutes or longer, this is wrong, neutralizer can also burn the hair, neutralize the thin hair only about 3 - 5 minutes. I have been to a chemistry class on hair. I agree with going back to the shop and asking for the best conditioner, some of the best are the Quantum products. (01/15/2010)

I would buy kelp pills, it is natural iodine, not synthetic (harder to absorb). This may help avoid anymore falling out. Also, Hair, Skin, and Nail vitamins at Dollar General help me. Olive oil is good as well.

Whatever you do, "do not" take kelp tablets. The alternative doctors say it is too strong and dangerous for daily use. Instead, I would strongly recommend the DG Hair, Skin and Nails vitamins along with added Biotin supplement which makes hair grow. Hair growth also responds to zinc which must be balanced with the right amount of copper.

Nothing can be done for that hair which is about to break off. Don't brush it when wet, use only warm water and very gentle baby shampoo when cleaning, air dry, use nothing hot for curling, do not color, tint, or bleach it. Brush much less often and with a simple brush with rounded teeth ends.

Thank God that you have enough extra hair to spare. Remember that hair grows about 1/2 inch per month, but with the added supplements above, it will grow faster. Watch for it's growth at the hairline just above the ends of the eyebrows' natural growth/location, and at the nape/neckline. If you have hereditary balding, it sometimes helps that as well.

Use "no" other products until the desired length and strength is what you want. Get into a routine, buy it regularly, and take it daily. (The DG brand is too week in Biotin, thus the need to supplement with much more, but not too much.)

I have very fine, straight hair and would often get perms for body, with no problems. Then after a few years, formulas changed. Now, every time I get a perm, my hair breaks off too. I have extremely healthy hair, not dried from over processing. Apparently, when using perm rollers with the elastic bands, there is a reaction between the solution, the elastic, and my hair. It always breaks along where the elastic band touched it, and the spots just spread. I've ended up with bald spots as big as silver dollars; it just keeps breaking at the roots. It grows out healthy.

An experienced beautician used some kind of sticks (but told me that pick-up sticks or bamboo shish kabob skewers would work too) to hold the rows of elastic bands up from my hair, with little to no breakage after the perm. I've since given up on perms. I guess that I was just meant to have straight hair. The worst part was figuring out how to fix my hair while it was growing out. I'd have little hair spikes sticking out all over. (01/18/2010)
