I just wanted to know if anyone has tried Magic Jack phone service, and what they think of it? It is used through your USB port on your computer. They claim you get local and long distance for 19.95 a year and that includes Canada. Too good to be true? So I am asking if anyone out there has used it, and how they liked the it. Any input would be appreciated.

I have 3 of them, 2 for business and one for personal use. It works very well, calls are clear and its easy to use. I bought a 5 year plan which makes it even a better deal. Unless you have power backup it won't work in a power failure. Land lines are more reliable, but for the price how can you go wrong. (10/31/2008)

Don't waste your time and money. Stay away. When it sounds too good to be true, it usually is! They have something hidden in the terms of service: if you call too much, they will cut you off and ask for more money. Did a google search and it has happened to many people already, so, "unlimited" is not in their dictionary! (11/06/2008)

I have, if you buy this device make sure to spend another $7 or $8 and buy a A/C USB adapter, or you will have problems. They are caused by heat from the computer and the lag of power when every USB hub on your computer is used and clogged-up. I have had MAGIC JACK for over a year with out no major problems until now.
I was very frustrated that the phone worked fine and now it is so hard to hear, luckily I found out what the problem really was. Don't buy a Magic Jack if you don't have a A/C USB adapter. They are cheap and will give you 4 -10 extra USB slots that you probably need on your computer anyway.
When all your slots are used up on your computer, everything on your computer seems to suffer who knew, something so simple. Magic Jack should give you the option, to purchase on when you buy the phone but they don't offer that yet. I hope I explained it well enough.
If you want to save lots of money and have some patience I would say yes buy the Magic Jack.

Works for me. Yes at times I hear a clicking noise but it goes away. As other people have stated they bill you right away not at the end of 30 days. The customer support is poor. But for the price, the good out weighs the bad. (11/18/2008)

For $39 for a year of free phone service best deal. I was thinking even if it was a scam I could spare the few bucks and return if not satisfied.
Just getting a telephone number dedicated to me was great. I have one for business and bought another for personal. FYI -The call forwarding is the best because the calls are perfect when I forward to cell phone. Love it! $20 bucks every year after the first. (11/30/2008)

I installed this device for 2 of my customers and then for myself and have had not one bit of a problem on any of them. Do you want me to believe I am just lucky that 3 out of 3 went in and performed?
I read all of these comments. Before I continue I should add that I have been a PC tech since 1982 and a network engineer since 2001.
I suggest that all of you whining about the performance:
The stuttering comes from TCP/IP packets being dropped, a symptom of a poorly setup computer.
It's way too easy to blame the product because you don't know what you are doing or how to maintain a computer. You folks who are not even ready for AOL should just stay away from higher level technology like VOIP. You can not take one person's complaints and apply them to your situation. Bad bandwidth will cause stuttering.
One guy said his brother has one and it works fine but his does not. Basic troubleshooting, switch them. If the "good" one does not work on the PC where the "bad one" is usually connected, then it is obviously the PC or the amount of bandwidth. Likewise, if the "bad" one works in the other computer it indicates the first computer is the issue as well.
Apply some logical troubleshooting steps here instead of just immediately saying the device is bad. It's a fine product that works well on a good connection and a good computer. (12/22/2008)

I just installed it earlier this morning & had it working in no time. 3-5 minutes. Did all kinds of tests, in and out. Sound was good. Registration was simple & I had my new phone number provided very quickly.
I purchased it 2 weeks ago, and I did go on different bulletin boards like this one, (due diligence and all) and read all kinds of comments: Good & Bad!, before I actually made the decision and bought one.
But, I learned this, most of the problems were not with the Magic Jack Device! The problem was usually with the user's computer or internet connection.

Magic Jack is easy to setup and the quality is great, but it will not work on Vista 64bits. No problems whatsoever using Xp and Vista 32 bits. (01/15/2009)

Been using Magic Jack for awhile, it's OK except for the ads. I found a free software to block or disable the pop up advertisements, check out "Magic Block" you can google it (01/27/2009)
