Home Remedies for Acne

Does anyone have any home remedies to clear up blemishes. I have suffered from acne for 14 years now and I have been to a dermatologist but nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

Answers:

Toothpaste

At bedtime, dab toothpaste on each blemish. It sometimes stings a little, but when I wake up, the acne is noticeably smaller. I use white paste - I don't know if the gel variety works as well. (11/15/2005)

Honey Remedy for Skin Blemishes

Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight. I personally have never tried this, but it's simple and worth a try.

Tree Tea Oil

Tree tea oil is great for acne, it also kills bacteria, but it smells horrible. You can buy it at Walmart cheap. A small bottle and a little goes a long ways. (11/15/2005)

Maalox

I am older than a teen but I still get them sometimes. Best Tip: buy Maalox or any cheap brand antacid. After you wash your face; shake bottle then put the antacid on your face, it is runny. It will dry stiff and then rinse off, you will see results quickly. It does not strip the skin and my skin looks good and feels great. (11/15/2005)

My Ideas

I have heard that if you take the yolk of an egg and put on your face until dry it really helps. I don't know how often you can do it, probably a few times a week.

Myself, I have suffered with acne since a teen, now in my late 40s. What I have found that works is this: I use Neutrogena pore refining cleanser each morning and then use Clean & Clear deep cleaning astringent once or twice a day. It has salicylic acid in it and it actually prevents the acne you will be getting in the future. I buy the orangeish one, it is 2% salicylic, the blue one is weaker, I believe it only has 1/2% of it. You will need to experiment and see how often you can use it without drying out your face too much. This stuff lasts a long time so there is not too much expense. Good luck, hope the egg or this helps.

Milk of Magnesia

Back in the 1960s our family doctor suggested I wash my face with tepid water only and after drying it I was to apply shaken "Milk of Magnesia" to my face, let it dry and then go to sleep. It would dry to a white chalk on my face. While sleeping my skin would absorb all of "it" so by morning very little of it would be left for me to rinse off. I am now in my 50s and blemish free (also acne scar free!) I tell all the teen age grand children about it as it really works! They now are doing the same thing and with very good results! It is not expensive to take care of a bad or not so bad acne! Try it you will be so impressed and then pass the word on! (11/16/2005)

Maalox

Paula Jo Carr,
Thank you so much for your advice with the Maalox I actually got some tonight to try it out because someone else had told me about it but they said to let it dry then wash it right off but I think it would be more effective to let it dry all night. Thanks again and wish me luck! (11/16/2005)

Peroxide and Toothpaste

I don't know how bad your acne is, but this is what I do, but my acne is nothing really, just a few here and there once or twice a month, but they are huge! I use peroxide or cheap white mint toothpaste or baking soda. Peroxide: just use cotton ball and cleanse the effected area. Toothpaste: put a dab on the effected area and let dry, wash off with warm water. Baking soda: make a paste and apply, let dry, wash off with warm water. All 3 will dry out the oils in the pimple. I hope this helps. (12/05/2005)

Apple Cider Vinegar

I was told to use apple cider vinegar with a cotton ball and put on your acne. It does sting a little but my acne seems to be going away and I've been using it for a week now. (12/06/2005)

Olive Oil

You might also want to switch your regular cooking oil to pure olive oil. My husband and I found we had breakouts and skin irritations every time we used regular hydrogenated vegetable oil. I'm not sure why. The olive oil is a bit more expensive but you can get it from Spanish stores cheaply. I also have this recipe which I use for a moisturizer for my skin which my grandma swore by for good skin if it's a bit oily or gets acne. 2 teaspoons of pure safflower oil, 5 drops clary sage essential oil, 5 drops bergamot oil. Mix all the oils together and store in a little perfume bottle. Rub two or three drops over your skin when it's wet after cleansing. (02/23/2006)

Honey and Salt

Mix together honey and plain table sugar. Put on blemishes overnight and they will be flat by morning. Also, make a mask of pure honey once a day to prevent other blemishes from forming. (04/20/2006)

Random Ideas

I've done some research because I have this terrible zit on my chin that is ballooning up and looking absolutely disgusting! Last night I put toothpaste on (not the gel kind) and I woke up and washed it off and it's still there but I guess kind of smaller. Plus now the white part is showing, which leads me to my next experiment with the egg white. I think its supposed to suck out the "nasty stuff" which I'm assuming is the white part of my ugly pimple. The egg white is rich in vitamin A which is good for your skin. Also, before you get rid of that yolk, you can use the yolk to make a mask. Beat it and then apply it with a cotton ball, leave on for fifteen minutes. The protein and fatty acids replenishes your skin.

Milk of magnesia I hear works well in drying out your acne but not your face. Hope some of those random facts helped! (01/21/2007)
