Home Remedies for Fleas

I think the fleas are in my bed. I have washed my sheets and blankets but it doesn't help. Any ideas for getting them out of the bed!
Thanks

(b)Editor's Note: (/b) First, with sheets and mattress pads off, vacuum your mattress completely. Then sprinkle borax powder (found in the laundry section of the grocery 20 Mule Team Borax) on the mattress and spread it around.

If there are carpets in the bedroom, treat them with borax at the same time. Keep any pets out while you are doing this. You could wash your bedding again at the same time you are doing this.

Give it a few hours, then come back and vacuum it up. The borax dries up fleas and eggs and hopefully should take care of the problem.

It depends on how much your flea infestation has progressed. I rarely use pesticides in our home, but by the time I realized that we had a flea problem a few years ago, it was difficult to combat without chemicals. We did vacuum and use borax and/or baking soda as recommended above. Our children were getting bitten up in their beds! We went to a hotel for a few nights! Then I allowed the exterminator to spray with a low toxicity treatment that does not kill the fleas, but makes them infertile.

This works, but takes time. We ended up having the house sprayed with the real stuff and the fleas were gone. One thing I think I did wrong that made the problem worse was I put our two cats out on the porch and that made the fleas attack us! If we had kept the cats inside, perhaps the fleas would not have been so vicious. (03/02/2007)

Get a little bottle of Oil Of Wintergreen liquid and pour a little on a cotton ball or in a tin pan or anything you can slide under the couch or chair, away from small children and pets. I don't know if it kills them or drives them away, but it works. You can buy it at drug store or grocery store, about .97 cents. Cindy T. (03/17/2007)

I found that Avon Skin So Soft works well. Our dog had a bad case of fleas and her skin was being affected by the soaps and powders we used. She looks like she is wet from the oil, however she has no fleas yet. 4 days later we added a capful to her final rinse and patted her dry (03/27/2007)

Salt

Yes salt works to kill fleas. Fleas are 99% water and the salt just dries them right up. Sprinkle it on your carpets, floors, beds. Anything! Let stay for three days and vacuum. Then do it again 2 more times for the eggs that are going to hatch. I haven't had fleas for almost 3 yrs. I have 5 cats, 12 kittens, and 2 dogs. (05/20/2007)

Well my neighbor has tried to get rid of the fleas on her dog. She told me that Pine Sol actually works to get rid of fleas and to prevent them. My dog is going to give birth in a couple weeks and I hope to get rid of those fleas before she gives birth.

(b)Editor's Note:(/b) Don't use this for cats. Cats are particularly sensitive to pine oils because they lack an efficient liver enzyme system to detoxify them. (05/29/2007)

I had found this remedy online, tried it and it works! Get some Borax 20 Mule Team laundry detergent. Sprinkle it on your carpet, bed and/or upholstery and let sit 24 hours. I put a gate up so my dogs were limited to the kitchen area. Then just vacuum. It worked for me. I also had heard that fleas do not like citrus and had found a recipe to spray on dogs to make the fleas jump off the dogs.

(Use this outside) It was with lemon juice and water but I'm not quite sure what the amounts were. No more Fleas!

I FORGOT TO MENTION AFTER YOU SPRINKLE THE BORAX ON YOUR CARPET, USE A BROOM TO BRUSH IT INTO THE CARPET. SORRY! (06/17/2007)

Because of the life cycle of the flea, you have to vacuum the entire house every day, for 3-7 consecutive days. I also put a flea collar in my canister or vacuum bag. (06/24/2007)

Whomever recommended pine-sol - Some dogs are allergic to that to (I'm not sure if it is the pine oil or the other ingredients) as my dog has reactions to pine-sol and ammonia based cleaners. I found Frontline topical is the best deal, as it repels AND kills, while the Sergant's at walmart only kills, so they still bother him.

Borax and salt are best on the carpet! You definitely need to vacuum often (and change bag).

Try Frontline and be vigilant. We have a problem that EVERYONE carries them in. Brush yourself off before coming in the house, and keep coats/shoes contained to one area. (06/24/2007)

I have discovered rubbing a dryer sheet on my dog every day keeps the fleas off of him. Make sure your dog does not have sensitive skin. Has to be done daily. (06/25/2007)

A good thing for the yard is Seven's Dust! I have a very large front yard and it works GREAT! It is $6 at Walmart for a large bag of it! You get it in the garden section and you can use it on your pets as well! I put it on my carpets and on the couch. Left it for a few hours and then vacuumed it up! This is a proven to work! You could even do your curtains and things in the wash with it and just rinse well! I haven't tried that one but I don't see why you couldn't! It also has instructions for how to use on the yard and pets! It is also great for killing slugs in the flower beds! YOU ALL HAVE MY WORD THAT IT WORKS! Good luck to you all! (07/12/2007)

There is NOTHING better than Advantage (you have to buy it online or from a Vet). This may sound harsh, but, after years & years of being allergic to & dealing with fleas, the ONE & ONLY thing that works for dogs & cats is Advantage!

---> You need to put it on the back of their neck once a month. It works by soaking through their skin & getting into their system. If you follow the directions, you'll have no problems. But, remember this: If it's the very first time you are using Advantage & your pet has fleas, be sure to leave him on the porch, or outside or in a bathroom for 1 or 2 days, as the fleas will start jumping off & you don't want them to jump into your home & live in your carpet! The Advantage also protects pets from Ticks & mosquitos too. Tell your kids not to pet the dog or cat near his neck or head for 3 or 4 days after giving it to him every month.

* It cost's about $10 - $12 per month, but believe me, There's NOTHING else like it out there, & nothing else works, I've tried all the "natural" things (& BTW, most of the "natural" products work by using smelly herbs, these may smell good to us, but Dogs & cats HATE the smell, because their sense of smell is so much better than ours)... YES! Advantage IS a nasty chemical, but, the way I see it... It's either Me, or the fleas... & if the fleas win, then I'll have to find another home for my pet... & that wouldn't be good!... So I go ahead & spend the money each month, then everyone is happy... Me, because I have no flea bites, My cat, he has NO fleas, not even one... & my home has no fleas jumping around in my carpet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Fleas will find a way in to your home from outside:

Take extra care to wipe your pants leg's down when you enter your home. Use a sticky, "Lint Roller"... this will grab any fleas before they "hitchhike" in on you! (07/12/2007)

careful using dawn

I noticed that a lot of people on here were using dawn and other dish soaps. It's OK to use them a couple times to get rid of the bulk of fleas. but be careful using it a lot. My grandma's dog lost all its hair because the dish soaps dry there skin and hair out and also kills hair roots. Her dog is flealess but looks sad because of the hair loss. (07/14/2007)

Someone told me to use mothballs in the vacuum for the fleas & I am for sure going to try the SALT Solution.

(b)Editor's Note:(/b) We don't recommend mothballs for anything because they are toxic and we get so many requests for getting rid of mothball smells once they have been used. : ) (07/27/2007)

BREWERS YEAST TABLETS MAKE FLEAS GO AWAY! Cats and dogs eat them like treats and it makes their skin distasteful to the fleas - simple as that! When I asked the pet store owner why he didn't have it right out on the counter during flea season he said that he makes more money on the other 'chemical' products and most people don't believe how well the natural stuff works. I've never seen any side effects from it and kittens and puppies get the benefits just from nursing off the mom. Its a little hard to find, again because the pet stores want to sell you specialty 'products', but a pet store that knows what works will have it. Also, salt works great on drying out the eggs in the carpet rather than using chemical products. (b)(/b) (07/31/2007)

Try Melathyion 50 Plus, you can get it at Walmart in the lawn and garden mix a capful with a gallon of water and spray your yard. It gets rid of fleas fast. After spraying your yard you can wash your dog in it, but make sure you rinse them well, and don't get in in their eyes or ears. It was what I found to get rid of them. It's an awesome product. When I am checking for fleas, I put on a pair of whites socks and walk all through my house. If there are any fleas they are attracted to white, and will jump on the socks. I also do this after I have treated my house for fleas. (09/05/2007)

Home Remedies for Fleas

We just adopted a puppy Great Pryness, he's about 30 lbs, Just noticed his under carriage was cover in tiny fleas. We called the vet and for only about $4.00 theres a pill you can get that will start working on killing fleas within 4 hours. I noticed a change in the dog within an hour.
It's called a CAPSTAR TABLET, it works and it's cheap, and once the fleas are off the dog, I shall rid the house of any fleas it may have and spray down the yard with SEVIN DUST.
Hope this helps.
By the way the Capstar only is affective for a day or two, but getting rid of all fleas at the same time is my goal.
I ordered a three month supply of Frontline Plus on Ebay for about $30. Should arrive in a few days.

Home Remedies for Fleas

Boric acid under your carpet. Not harmful to pets or people. (09/09/2007)

Home Remedies for Fleas

Too much boric acid IS harmful and there is NO antidote. I've seen houses covered in that stuff with empty fogger cans strewn about as well, and the folks still had fleas.

Mainly boric acid acts like a desiccant 'it breaks down the waxy coating on an insects skeleton and dries them out' It also has insecticidal properties I know but thats generally it's mode. Don't get me wrong I love home remedies - the cheaper the better. But you have to be careful because some consequences come with a heavy load.

For those of you with fleas there are a few steps--
Treat the pet
Address & or treat the source
Prepare the area to treat
Use a product that will cut the flea life cycle as well as Kill the adults

I found that this has really help get the fleas off my long haired chihuahua. I took dawn dish soap and empty one tea bag of Earl Grey in with the soap. Lather up the dog with soap tea mix, just massage into dog for about ten minutes. Then rinse off soap. Then I put eucalyptus spearmint conditioner on him (like the kind from bath and bodyworks. Then rinse off. And you should be good to. All fleas should be death by the time you dry pet off. Make sure to get the head, ears and paws where fleas run to! (09/12/2007)

Home Remedies for Fleas

FYI, THOSE SPOT-ON FLEA PROTECTIONS YOU PUT ON THE BACK OF YOUR PETS NECK ARE HIGHLY TOXIC TO YOUR PETS AND TO YOU! The reason they work is because they release a poison into your pets blood. The flea sucks the poisoned blood and then dies. The problem is, eventually, your pet will be sick from organ problems due to the treatment. Vets know this, but sell it anyway. Use natural treatments and cedar products in and around the house and yard. (10/23/2007)

Home Remedies for Fleas

I put vinegar in my pet's water dish every time I fill it. I don't know how much I use, you can smell it but it is not too strong. They have no problem drinking it and it does seem to be helping. I put garlic on their food and they lap it up. Salt on the carpet works great too. There is also one spray I found at the Dollar General Store called Rid A Bug that works great and is not too expensive to put on the carpets. (10/23/2007)

I have learned that Johnson and Johnson Tear Free Baby Shampoo...the yellow tear free kind works the best. Wet your cat or dog down with water...you can use a spray bottle if needed and then lather your pet up really good...don't forget the face and because it is so mild and tear free it is completely safe to use, and leave it on for ten minutes...you may have to lock your pet up in a bathroom or something...i usually let mine roam. After 10 minutes rinse your pet and let them dry off. Go through with flea comb for any possible live ones and then dust pet with flea powder...you don't have to use alot...another thing would be lavendar oil mixed with water...fleas don't like it. For your carpets and furniture I recommend Zodiac carpet and furniture spray it kills and inhibits growth of fleas and breaks the cycle, it is a little more expensive, but thus far is the only thing I've found that works...salt works but not for that long. After a week bathe cat again. This should work. (10/26/2007)
