Unfortunately, there is no adequate substitute for real veterinary products in this area. Even the store-bought kinds of over-the-counter (OTC) stuff are a waste of money. Save up and go to the vet with a fresh stool sample in a baggie. (10/12/2005)

I would never attempt such a thing, you can kill your pets with over the counter wormers. Please take a stool sample to your vet.

I do what a vet in a northern state told us to do. First, make sure the dog is free of heartworms. Now, for most worms, you can use Ivomec wormer for cattle and swine. It is an injectible, but all household/farm animals can take it. We give our dogs: 160 lbs and 50 lbs, a few drops in their water once a month. Of course the big dog gets more. He gets about a dropperful, and the little one gets about 1/3. The cat gets a couple of drops. For tapeworm, you can use Cattle-Guard/Panacur. They need this treatment for three days.

We have done this for the past seven years. It adds up by doing this, as the Ivomec costs only about $40.00 a bottle. We have only bought four bottles in this time, and it has been used for dogs, cats, pigeons, and chickens. The Cattle-Guard costs about $10.00 per tube, and we only needed one tube-vs-about $60.00 for a one time pill treatment.

You can buy this at most feed stores. Of course, you should probably check with your vet, and if it is an honest one, they will help you with any questions on this. We have moved twice since the first vet told us about it, so we've had the chance to ask the other vets that we've used. All of them (4) have said we are doing it correctly. It definitely saves over the once a month, which for us would be over $100.00 for a three month supply.

We wormed our dogs with garlic for years and have had them checked by the vet and they did not have worms. We browned ground beef, and added fresh garlic. We have also been using black walnut extract purchased at a health food store. It doesn't give them bad breath and is really easier. It has been our choice for the last several years. Dose would be according to your dog's size. A small dog (10lbs) starting at about 3 drops and my big dogs (50lbs) about 10-15drops.

I have a six month old puppy that has only been wormed with black walnut starting at about 3-4wks old. We also have his mother, she weights around 50lbs, who has only gotten the black walnut. She had 6 healthy puppies. The one we kept is now weighs 60lbs with a beautiful shinny coat. We usually worm twice a month, but I always start with a small dose and use a little as possible. I don't believe in taking anything you don't need, even if all natural.

Always use caution and always do your homework with anything you or your pets take. Mommy, daddy and puppy are all given the black walnut. I have never given this to any other type animals, only dogs. I am not a professional so please use caution as I send this advice based on my experience with my sweetie dogs. (10/18/2005)

This does not only pertain to worming dogs and if they have red mange, but for "ILUVDOBES" and "AARDVARK" not everybody can afford to go to the vet every time. My vet charges $4.00 a pill for a treatment of tape worms, it takes 6 pills per dog. Usually when one of my puppies gets them I have to treat all 3 of my puppies. That's 18 pills @ $4.00, that's $72.00. That's insane the vets are out to make money. If you need meds for your dogs there is a great web site www.revivalanimal.com. There meds are what the vets use and a heck of a lot cheaper.

And just in case any one needs to know the treatment for "red mange" which is hereditary, since the vet wants to charge $25.00 per dipping and it takes about 4 to 5 dippings that is quoted from the doctor himself. Ivomec cattlewormer works great for that given by weight, down into tenths of a CC (i.e. 50 lb. dog gets .05 CC) for 30 to 60 days. It works, compared to $125.00 for the dippings or a bottle of Ivomec which is approx. $40.00. I am not saying don't ever take your dog to the vet, but sometimes there are alternative treatments that work. Remember he is a business man no matter what that doesn't make him a bad guy. The internet will most likely have an answer for you also. (10/23/2005)

Regular worming is essential to protect your dog against internal parasites. This involves giving it preparations in liquid or tablet form. Adult dogs should be wormed at least once a year, and at least once every six months if in contact with children. Dogs showing any signs of infection should be wormed immediately and all breeding bitches should be wormed prior to mating. I do hope it's been helpful. Actually, those that gave tobacco to their dogs are just lucky that the dogs didn't die! Tobacco can make your dog seriously ill or kill it. It is just a myth that it kills worms, there is no truth to it.

Also, too much garlic can also make a dog sick. Garlic is listed on the ASPCA's website as a "poisonous" food for dogs. However, some holistic remedies for dogs have (very) small amounts of garlic in them, because it helps the immune system. So garlic can help, but make sure it is in small quantities only.

Still tobacco kills dogs and cheap beer does not work either.

Bring your dog to a vet if he/she has worms. Seriously, would you give yourself surgery in order to save a doctor's bill? Don't treat your dog at home, either. That's what vets are for! (06/02/2008)

I take my dogs to the vet as puppies, then I treat at home unless it's something I feel I can't handle, Ivermectin is great, if used right. I also go to a local pharmacy and get 5 in shots. The only shot I don't give them is the rabies shot, but now and then, I take them in to be checked. My vet laughs. He says I know your dogs don't have worms. He even sells premixed Ivermectin for dogs, he firmly believes in it. (01/03/2009)

Some people have brought up some really interesting ideas, but as for home remedies I have had little to no success. I would really say check out something like silverliningherbs.com. I have used it for years and it has been working wonders. (01/25/2010)
