Always keep your pup in sight, give them a blanket or a dog bed as a safe place. Take them out first thing in the morning even before you go to the bathroom. Always feed them breakfast first thing. Wait about 20 minutes then with a warm moist wash cloth, depending on age of puppy (this will stimulate them just like the momma did) rub their belly and go outside. Give the command go potty, pee pee or go pee. Let them smell around a bit, do not play with them until they have done their thing.
When they have "watered their Lilly" as my mother says, praise them, but make sure the pup is done before you bring them back in to the house. Take them to their bed, this will get them ready for when their feet are wet, and you don't want them tracking up your floors, give a treat, tell them good boy or girl. Never feed after 5 p.m. Take up the water by 7 p.m. If they act like they are thirsty, I give my pups a cube of ice, or ice chips, depending on size or breed. They need to empty out before bedtime, always take them out just before you go to bed, even if you have to wake them up.
When you leave your home always take them out, then leave them in a confined area, use a baby gate across the door way or a crate. This will stop them from tearing up your house. As soon as your return take them out.
Every 30 to 40 minutes during the day always ask them "got to go out, go pee pee, go potty" after a couple days you and your pup will get on a schedule. Wee wee pads are helpful as well, placing them by the door in case you don't get to them in time, but do not scold them if the pup uses the pad, because they are getting the right idea to go to the door.
Always use one door to go potty, you might confuse the pup if more then one door is used. Remember a pup is not totally house broken until the age of at least 1 year old, accidents happen reinforce with a treat when they do the deed.
To help stop chewing give lots of dog toys. If the pup gets something of yours exchange it for one of their toys. This really does work, just before the exchange tell the pup that's mine, this is yours.
Do not give a pup an old shoe to chew on, this will confuse them because the scent will be the same they can't tell the difference. To them it is a shoe. Always give dog safe toys, puppies are just like baby humans they swallow bits and pieces of the toys and this will create problems with choking and internal blockage this may cause your pup it's life.
