House Training a Puppy?

We just adopted a pup from southern California that was running the streets. She is an American Pit Bull, 6-8 months old. She keeps going potty in the house. Every time we take her outside she cowers, tucks her tail, and will not go to the bathroom even if we put her in the grass. Any suggestions?

Your dog is having territorial issues.

She is convinced she's in another dog's territory and will get in trouble for going there.

Try this: Get some cheap rugs at Walmart. Allow her to go on them indoors a few times. Then take them outdoors. When you take her to the backyard, take her to go on these rugs.

Also, you need to familiarize her with the yard. Take her out every day on a short leash (not a flexi-leash) and walk her all around the edge of the fence. Do this several times.

If you don't have a fence, you need one. Your dog needs a territory she can feel safe in and defend. It also keeps other dogs from wandering onto the property and marking it as her own. Whenever you take her out to "go" only take her to the yard where other dogs have not gone but she has.

Put her on a leash tied to your waist. Everywhere you go, she goes. Plus outside every hour. If she pees out there, turn her into the best dog in the whole wide world. You'll have to do the leash thing for about a week.

Also, no treats, just her one meal a day. This limits the number of bowel movements. Be sure to give her a tiny treat when she potties outside.
