Identifying Black Hairy Caterpillars?

I have hundreds of black hairy caterpillars all over my yard. How do I find out what kind they are?

They could be tent caterpillars, that form webs in trees and shrubs.

Go to your local greenhouse with a sample, they will know what they are - that's what I do with creatures and plants I'm not sure of. Hope this helps.

Try taking one or two (or a photograph of them) to your local extension ag agent. He or she will be able to identify the critter, and tell you what (if any-some bugs are beneficial) pest control you should use.

You can also Google to find the local extension agent website, where you'll find page after page of information geared to your specific area-maybe even a pic and info on the caterpillars in your garden.
