Identifying a Houseplant?

wilted plant with variegated leavesI picked this up from work (it was going to be thrown out), but I have no idea what it is or how to care for it. At first I thought it was a peace lily, but it does not have the same stalks. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm pretty sure I have this plant. I don't know the name of it either. Have had it for years. Mine doesn't get direct sunlight, but there is plenty of light in the room. I let it dry out then water it thoroughly. You can also root it in water. Hope this helps. Mine takes a lot of abuse at times, maybe a dead leaf here and there, I just remove them.

I'm trying to find out what this is as well. I had one many years ago and loved it. All I remember is they don't need a lot of water and do better if they aren't frequently soaked.

/edit: Looks like a dieffenbachia, or 'dumb cane' plant.

I think it is a Dieffenbachia. It naturally loses its inferior leaves and it has to be cut back so that it will not end up with a nude trunk and a few leaves at the top. Keep it away from children and pets the sap is very toxic.
