Identifying a Houseplant?

Sorry I can not add a photo. I have been given a plant as a gift. There was no name with it. I hope someone can help. The plant does not have flowers, but red feather type blooms that feel spongy when you touch them! It is very upright and stands approx 18 inches.

Any help will be very much appreciated

It's hard to say without seeing a photo, but it could be a bromeliad.

Can you take photo with your cell phone? If not try to find someone who can help you with this as it would very difficult to even venture a guess (for me), although it does sound like a bromeliad. But maybe someone else can help you.

Here are some photos of different red bromeliad - maybe you can find one like yours:

If you can't find someone to take a photo, you could go to a plant store and ask an employee what sort of plant you have, though it does sound like a bromeliad. We had one and it was lovely
