Identifying a Snake?

I came home a few days ago to find a black snake with yellow diamond pattern on my front porch. It was about 5' long. It was very fast and when it felt threatened it left the front porch and headed for the shrubbery. About 30 minutes later, I saw its head protruding from the shrub. It was up about 4' in the shrub. I live in Tennessee. Can anyone tell me what kind of snake it might be?

This sounds like a gray rat snake. They can vary in color quite a bit, and some are dark with yellow. They are very common in TN, and also like to get up in shrubs.
