Is It Rude for My Dog to Pee on Neighbors' Lawns?

Is It Rude for My Dog to Pee on Neighbors' Lawns? - large brown lawnI really had no idea that people got so upset when dog walkers let their dogs pee on their grass. I have female dogs and a male who doesn't hike yet, so they don't hike on plants. I do pick up my dogs' poop. I walk my dogs for exercise, not so they can eliminate in other peoples' yards. It's embarrassing to me when they do. But if you ever tried stopping a 100+ lb dog from going the bathroom, you would know the struggle. I can definately understand getting upset about people letting their dogs pee on their flowers or poop and leave it for you to pick up, that's just rude. My dogs have a huge yard to pee in and yet they climb into my hostas to pee! So irritating. I'm going to try the pepper thing. But do all of you get upset just because a dog squats in your grass? I'm just curious, cause that I didn't know. I mean I have 3 Newfoundlands and a Great Pyrenees and I have no dead grass from them peeing.

There are many people who spend a lot of time and money on their landscaping and generally do not appreciate an animal using their yard for their personal bathroom. Some of these people must be your neighbors and it is probably causing them a lot of stress so to keep the peace you may have to find another route. Hopefully you have some personal yard space so the walks are not the only exercise your dogs have available but I do know that large dogs really need a lot of exercise.
I do not feel that your dogs are doing anything that is not common place in some neighborhoods but if your neighbors are giving you emotional trouble then you will probably have to try and find another way for your dogs to get their exercise.

Do you have a dog park anywhere near your area? That is sometimes a good thing (but not always).
I agree with likekinds about trying to control a large dog (even a small one sometimes) as it can be a tremendous struggle and the human will usually be on the losing end.
I feel for you but sometimes things like this get carried to extreme levels and you will probably find that you will receive a lot more responses that say "yes - it is rude" than you will who will say it is okay.

I have a lovely large fenced in yard for my dogs. One, however, refuses to use it as a bathroom. He will come in and cry till I walk him and he goes potty. Seriously, I don't have any idea if my neighbors mind. Most have pets so I hope they're ok. I always clean up but still...

Unfortunately, some pet owners do not deworm their dogs. So, my grandchildren can contract parasites from their bathroom remains even if the pile is no longer visible.

be sure your dogs does its business in YOUR YARD before the walk begins.

Take your dog to a dog park. Don't want it urinating in my yard. Think about it. That is filth and your are leaving it in my yard. Let it p---- is your own yard.

Yes, this practice is disrespectful for the homeowner that owns the grass bring used as the dogs personal toilet.

You guys have got to be kidding! What's so funny to me is that you probably don't realize the army of racoons, deer, opossums, birds and other animals that are all over your yards every night because you are asleep! You think the soil in your yard is "clean"? We live in a natural world; thank goodness. Urine and poop are a part of life.

My close neighbors think my yard is the neighborhood dog park. One of them have a baby sitter during the day and she takes the dog with infant in tow and she comes out of the house and comes straight over to my house not in my yard closest to the road but she lets the dog sniff its way right up to my front porch to let it dump and when I said something she replied " What! I am picking it up!" It's not just these 2 neighbors closest to me but its the ones who walk later in the dark that don't pick up but because of these 2 dogs that come earlier they come to the SMELL!

Looking for the best answer to the probem? SOOOOO! What is wrong for all you Big and small Dog owners how about you walk your dog/dogs in your own back yard after feeding themand let them dump there. Then start your walks like I use to when I owned a big dog as not to "PI#$" OFF the neighbors along the walk and carry a bag just in case. But you stupid dog owners can't figure that out Right!!!!! or YOU just don't want to smell up your own yards either, so other peoples dogs don't come and dump in your yard!!!!!

Im having this problem right now. We own dogs and I dont let them pee on other lawns. We go to the bottom of the street where they pee on the city bark area or in my backyard. We installed a camera for safety purposes and now I see all the neighbors dogs and owners allowing them to pee on my lawn.

Our new lawn looks terrible and I think its extremely rude. I asked a lady nicely if she wouldnt mind taking her dog off my lawn and she got mad and said something rude back to me. I couldnt believe it.

It is very rude to let your dog relieve himself on someone else's lawn. The urine burns out the grass and feces leave a smell, even if you pick up.

May 16, 20182 found this helpful

Yes, it is disgusting and destructive. I am a responsible pet owner and do not take my dogs to relieve themselves a neighbors property. It is like you, yourself relieving yourself in their yard or flowerbed. There is a big hygiene issue because children get on the ground and end up eating dirt.

An occasional incident is forgivable but walking your dog every day to relieve themselves in a neighbors yard is unconscionable.

The dog does not know better but the owner should. Would you like your neighbor going on your front yard?

December 22, 20182 found this helpful

Ridiculous. Dogs poop on walks. When, they do, most responsible dog owners pick it up in a baggie, and dispose of it I think trash. But dogs also pee on walks. Its what they do. If you are walking a dog in a neighborhood, it will pee somwhere outside of your yard - either on the neighbors sidewalk, the edge of their yard, their bush, or their tree.

Some dogs rarely pee while on a walk. Others pee like 7 or 8 times. I walked my mothers dog, and he peed 15 times on the walk. Rarely, by dogs might pee it the gutter on some leaves, but otherwise they are going to pee on your property. As being a responsible dog owner involves walking/exercising your dog, into all yards a little pee will fall.

THANK YOU. MOST DOG OWNERS ARE STUPID TO EVEN THINK THAT IT'S OK FOR THEIR DOG TO USE ANYBODY'S YARD AS A LITTERBOX.

Honestly I think all you folks who get upset over a dog urinating in your yard really don't have enough on your plate if this makes it to your concern list. Control issues much?? If you are so worried about urine, fence in your yard. And while you are at it, just get yourself a biosphere so you can be sure no bird poo falls near your property either. All the animals (dogs, cats, birds, deer, racoons etc) I know of don't understand what invisible property lines are. When did we become so intolerant? When did we start indulging such behavior? It's embarrassing to me to even have to discuss this, it's absolute nonsense.

You still own the property. Property is shared with the state for utility lines or pipes. (easement)The state isn`t going to sell the land to McDonalds. Only time your neighbor should be on it is to enter their property not for their dog`s toilet. Property owner has 1st use of the land. That`s why if the state runs pipes or wires they go under your driveway not bash it up for utilities. They fix it if the drive needs fixing. I googled this answer because my neighbor thinks it`s not my yard so they can poop there every day and dig holes like they`re burying the waste.. I say "no"..If I`m supposed to cut the grass it`s mine. The property just came with that portion to be shared with the state. It`s still yours.

Yes, try to find another route where that does not happen.

So find another route in someone elses yard? Seriously do you people think that dogs are the only ones that urinate in your yard? Do you bitch at the squirrels too?

Consider walking your dogs away from yards-perhaps a country path or field. Some people leave their dogs' pee and logs on my lawn and I hate it!

I'm a new homeowner and my neighbor walks her dog every day past my yard to pee and poop. I work from home and my office face the yard so I see her. The dog doesn't want to poop in my yard and always want to go to the next neighbors yard. But she stands there with hopes her dog poop in my yard. The dog won't do anything until it gets to the next yard (that's a good boy). But I started putting pressure on her. When I see her walk and stop in front of my yard, he hurry up and open the blinds all the way and just stand in the window and stair at her. This makes her feel uncomfortable and she walks on. But if I don't catch her, she will make that stop and try to let her dog do what he do in my yard.

Yes, it is thoughtless. My husband spends a lot of time mowing, edging, fertilizing and watering our yard. Dog urine burns the grass and turns it brown like hay. It actually kills the grass. We also spend a lot of money fertilizing and watering. Why is your dogs leash so long that it allows them to go onto private property? We have a large German Shepherd dog and I would never allow him to go onto someone else's property unless invited. If a neighbor comes out to talk with us we always make sure we walk up the driveway and stay off the grass.

"But if you ever tried stopping a 100+ lb dog from going the bathroom, you would know the struggle".

Dogs pee whether they really have to or not. It's called 'scent marking'. You should not have dogs you cannot control.

I have family members that are allergic to dogs and cats. It is not fair to people that have allergies to have to tolerate disrespectful neighbors. If you can't control your animals or care about the health of others maybe you shouldn't have animals. Besides you probably wouldn't want me to send my grandchildren over to your house to pee on your lawn.

Of course you cannot control your dogs but maybe hopefully the dog pees when the homeowners aren't home.

But it happens.. anyway you can take a stroll in a different direction where there aren't homes? Back aisle, pathway?

Animal urine can cause brown spots to develop in grass. Especially if your pup has a "favorite" lawn and there are repeated occurrences .

It is very rude. In fact, where I live it is against city ordinance and the dog owner can be arrested, taken to court and fined or even have their dogs taken away if they are a repeat offender.

Urine can kill grass over time, and if mixed with some lawn chemicals it will kill the grass the first time. Urine is ammonia.

The home I am currently renting has the most grass space on the block and it attracts all the dogs. Since HOA manages the front lawn, I do not mind if the dogs pee/poop, however what annoys me is when the dog owners do not pick up after their dogs!

August 14, 20171 found this helpful

I don't mind people walking their dogs on my grass by the road and letting them pee on it as long as they pick up the poo which they do mostly. lol I actually tell the people that so they know they're welcome. They're so thankful. Your dogs would be welcome Amanda and you wouldn't have to be embarrassed. I consider any yellow spots reminders that my doggy friends have stopped by. lol I'm not a dog owner BTW.

Some people go barefoot in their yards, babies play in the grass. It's gross to get pee on my feet from someone's dog and it has happened. If your dog refuses to pee in your yard find another place out of neighbor's yards for him to go. If you can't control him, he needs to be trained. Not having control of your dog is not a good excuse.

I understand and wouldnt mind one bit if your furbabies did their business in my yard, but I care more about animals than grass.

Yes, it is rude. A dog on a leash is supposed to be under your control. It goes where you will or will not let it. I never let my dogs so much as step foot in someone's yard. Neighbors' yards are not appropriate places for your dog to go to the bathroom. Find a city park, dog park, community walking paths, open land, etc. to walk your dog. My dogs will stop and go on sidewalks & in the street. People spend a lot of money to maintain their landscapes. Cat and dog urine burns lawns which costs money to fix. Poop including its residue attracts bugs and rodents. The world does not revolve around dog owners.

I think its terrible thing to do. I always find dog defecation in my yard, almost on a daily basis. I would also suggest if you cannot control your dog to get rid of it. I really hate when people own a dog and dont understand the intricacies and pitfalls of certain breeds and the simple dog etiquette you need to follow owning one. I am not against maybe being right next to the very edge of the lawn near the road or something. When you own a dog I understand that yes, it is sometimes its hard to avoid having your dog do their business. However I caught my neighbor allowing his dog to wander in the yard right in front of my house. When I confronted him he had to nerve to make me out to be the bad guy pointing out 'I HAVE A BAG!'. SO WHAT? Its MY yard not yours. People are so selfish and self centered these days. It doesn't surprise me that he clearly decided to act like I was the one with the problem. So ridiculous. I then went inside, took my container of cayenne pepper and put it all over my yard. I plan to buy a much bigger quantity of it and do this on a regular basis now. Ive really had enough. That is my solution to this. If people arent going to be polite, why should I care if their dog gets a snootful?
