Put and apple in the bag with your potatoes, and they will not sprout.

To keep potatoes from sprouting, lay an apple in with your potatoes. A chemical (gas) that the apple give off will help to keep them from sprouting.

My friend tried this and the potatoes still sprouted. She put a fresh apple in a plastic bag that the potatoes came in and sealed it with the plastic tab fastener. Is there any special tip other than the apple? (06/28/2005)

i cover them with a towel and keep them away from light, that works, as long as you use the potatoes in a short time
Don't keep potatoes in a plastic bag, Potatoes need air otherwise they will sprout and /or rot.
