These are all compatible with composting and can be used to make compost after kitty is done. If it makes you squeamish to use it on food crops, which I have done with no ill effects, just use it for your flowers or trees after composting.

Thank you for the advice. I have worked for a Veterinarian for over 27 years and it is our experience that wood shavings/sawdust can cause upper respiratory infections in cats. I would also be careful of the dirt as it can contain organisms that can cause illness. The paper shredding is a great idea. (04/01/2010)

Everyone should do what I did. Get a cat door. Put the litter box outside. Works great. I use wood pellets.
For the poster who worked in the vet --and does not recommend sawdust or wood shavings, does this include the pelleted form--as used in wood burning stoves or the pelleted wood horse bedding. The idea is that the urine soaked wood breaks down, but is that going to create enough dust to harm cats?
kiln dried Equine pine pellets work great, turns to saw dust when wet, easy to scoop out. 40 lbs 5.98
I just started using cat littler with baking soda and hamster bedding(the soft dust free) and they havnt shown signs of hating it
