Let Children Get Dirty

Let Children Get DirtyI worry that too often in today's society, we are keeping kids from just being kids. It is rare that I see children outdoors, splashing through puddles and making mud pies. Perhaps it is fear of dirt and germs, or perhaps it is because parents are so "busy" that they don't want the hassle of cleaning up a child and his or clothing, or perhaps it is just because we want them to be like little grown-ups. I don't know why it is, but it seems rare to see a child just playing in the mud.

This is my daughter and her little dog, Moo, enjoying the muddy results of a sudden rainstorm. It didn't take me long to get them cleaned up again, and this photo stands out as a special memory among hundreds of photos with clean hands and tidy clothing.

You are so correct about kids today. They need to get outside and play in the dirt. Pets are also a great idea. kids need to be exposed to germs and bacteria in order to build an immune system.

Kids who are sheltered away from such things always get sick easily and grow into sickly adults. I know some people who grew up sickly and are sickly today.

You are really on to the best post today. Oh yes indeed children are living in such sterile environment that they have no idea what it's like to be a child.
I'm a senior and we used to get dirty in the sand box and made mud pies and no one ever said not to get dirty.
Such freedom and simple times. So glad that I lived in those days.

Wonderful photo! Playing in the dirt is not just good for the soul, it is good for the immune system. A study in Norway showed babies under 6 months who were exposed to the dust on a farm (walked through the barn) were much less likely to have allergies when they grew up.

Not only that. Our council cuts off the lower branches of trees in public areas to stop kids climbing them. In the name of of the modern gods, Health and Safety. Sometimes I'm glad to be old.

What I seem to hear and read so much of today is how other people should raise their children. My children are grown. Some got really dirty and some wanted to stay clean. But is isnt my place or anyones place to tell other parents how to raise their children. We need to do what is comfortable to us instead of worrying about if we are doing it right because of what other people say.
