Living Room Colours Advice?

room view including wallpaper samplesI'm not very good at big decisions so I hope someone can help. We have just ordered a black corner sofa. I'm thinking of a mid brown two tone carpet, as I want to take it through the hall stairs and landing too. After looking at many samples I found the red floral wallpaper to go on the fireplace wall, rest of the walls will be painted. What do you think, will the paper be overpowering? Also what colour curtains? Any advice will be welcome, thank you in advance.

Can you get a larger piece of that wallpaper to put it up on the wall and see how it interacts with the light in that room?
It IS a statement...and reds tend to be vibrant and not a calming color..just realize that for the living room. Also, a little goes a long way so it's great that you are highlighting only one wall.

I would try to use the light color in the flowers petals for carpet and window treatment.
My window treatment of choice would be structured larger blinds with that particular wallpaper and a black couch. Not flowing loose curtains.

I would recommend at least one pillow or accent piece with a SMALL portion of that vibrant red but in another pattern. I feel an Asian vibe with your color and pattern choices...love that look!

I was unsure of your question. If you are showing two different wallpapers in your photo, I prefer the red one, but I think you should choose the one with the white background because I worry about your room being too dark. You'll have a very dark piece of furniture and its going to overpower the room unless you can find a way to blend it in. Don't get carpeting that is very dark as well.

I understand that you may have children or pets. I've been there, done that, too. I recently read to use all neutrals in a room of any color... I would use your red as your accent color. So you don't want more than 20% of your room to be in the red... Look at photos on pinterest.com and see what you like. You can search under "red accents" etc. Are you sure you don't want to do your carpeting in shades of grey? That would help tie in the black sofa. I like the other person's suggestion to use a shade from your wallpaper to paint the other walls of the room. don't feel you need to be too matchy matchy... use any "value" of your color.... value is strength or depth of the color. Spread a little of your red in at least 3 places in your room.

Maybe you want a red chair! Or a chair with a red seat cushion? But for sure you will want red and white sofa pillows... they will help cover up all the blackness so its not a big black hole in the room. Do you think it would help you decide if you took a photo of your room with the new sofa in it? Best of luck!
