You need to use yeast in your recipe so that the dough will rise.

if you use baking powder to make the donuts rise they will be like cakes. If you use yeast then they will be more likely to be like the glazed donuts in the store. Yeast isn't very expensive and you usually only need a tablespoon or so of it.

I usually use 2 pkts when it calls for lpkt in South Georgia as the air doesn't have much leavening in the air for the yeast to do the best job. Just try a few recipes and see. If it calls for yeast though you use yeast.
