Managing Curly Hair?

August 20, 2008

Girl with red curly hair.I have naturally curly, brown hair. it used to be below my shoulders but it was so hot this summer I cut it off short, like 2 in. max short, however it's always puffy and it never works with me, it's a total pain in the butt. Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of styles would look good? Or any good (cheap too if you can) hair products that would make my hair straight and less puffy? I can't flat iron it, there isn't enough hair! Thank you.

Seeing it's probably really difficult to get it straight at that length, I would just go with your curl and try to get it as curly as you can. While it's still wet run a pick through it then work about a dime size of hair gel through, then scrunch it with a towel. Then just a light spritz of pump hair spray then scrunch again, let it air dry and don't touch it. Also, dream curls pump, spray by frizz ease (john frieda). Works awesome! After it dries spray a little on then scrunch. It's kinda expensive but worth it. If your hair starts to get poofy, just spray a little on, you could also try different head bands and hair accessories

Good luck!

I have short brown naturally curly hair. After washing mine, I mix together a bit of light hold mousse and a slightly smaller amount of a curl enhancer/frizz tamer in my palm and rub my hands to combine. I distribute evenly through my hair (don't use too much product or it will end up stiff) and then finger style and allow to air dry. This should help the hair curl rather than frizz.

Best thing I have ever found for my 2" short curly red hair is John Frieda's Secret Weapon. It goes on dry hair, so I keep a tube at the office. It just transforms puffy dry hair into curls.

What I do with mine is I never use a hair dryer because it causes it to friz big time, use the frize ease and a pic.. When it grows out you can try a shag cut and when it gets hot I then wash it.

I put it up and after a few hours when I let it down. It's almost straight and no friz.

I use this product called curls up, very inexpensive and my favorite thing about it, it takes away the frizz, but unlike gel it doesnt get hard. my hair is so soft and smells so good with this product, I have used it for years.

I use Noodlehead. It's available at Sally Beauty Supply. It is great and inexpensive.

Don't shampoo your hair everyday but every 3 days. I deep condition every night. Brush hair only when its wet and with a wide tooth comb. And I don't use any product in my hair whatsoever unless its an event. But if you need to,

put a 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice in a squirt bottle with some (.5 tsp to 1 tsp) sea salt and a glob of conditioner (leave in conditioner or super moisturizing conditioner works best.

Mist in damp hair for the day and go.

It looks like you've been to the beach and you look carefree.

Hi fellow curly girl, In 2000 I discovered a wonderful website about curly hair, as I don't know about you but I have always had horrible haircuts because essentially all hairdressers were cutting my hair as if it were straight, hence I would always look like a mushroom unless I spent hours blowing it straight and even then, anyhoo go to Ouidad.com You will not believe the smallest tip will make, use duckbill clips the group four sections of your hair to dry naturally using gel on each section ensuring you get each section evenly. Wait until you see how amazing your hair looks. The best investment would be is to get a Ouidad haircut, they have a list of salons that do carving and slicing her original type of curly haircut. Finally places that cut only curly hair. Good luck.

My hair is also short and curly, thanks to a tragic misunderstanding at the salon. I had sort of an existential crisis about it until my DH got home and reminded me, "Silly girl, your hair is nice, but it's not what I love about you." And then he suggested I buy some pretty scarves at http://www.modestworld.com and http://www.tznius.com -- which I'm still enjoying, despite the fact that now, five years later, my hair has grown out again. Hats, caps, scarves, snoods, it's all been a blast. Not only do I get an additional element to add to any outfit to dress it up or make it more fun, but no one ever knows anymore whether I'm having a bad hair day. And because they don't know, they don't care.

If covering isn't your cup of tea, I suggest rubbing your hair with warm olive oil (the cheapest kind you can find) and letting it sit for half an hour before each time you shampoo. Use an all-natural, cruelty-free conditioner, then don't blow-dry your hair. Just pat it with a towel, comb, shake, and let the curls fly free. If you've got very dry, frizzy hair like I do, supplement the above with a little extra leave-in conditioning. You can find very good olive oil based creams and hair lotions in the ethnic sections of most grocery stores and drug stores -- look for a section called "for African hair." Alternatively, get an inexpensive leave-in conditioner of any type, mix in a SMALL amount of olive oil, and pat it onto just the tip-ends and the roots of your hair, leaving the in-between areas alone. Or rub it onto your palms and pat lightly on still-damp hair.

I always complain about my hair because it gets poofy, and I can tell that my friends are tired of me asking if my hair is OK. They tell me to straighten it, but I don't want to get keratina (something that keeps you hair straightened for a long time) and I don't want to straighten it because, honestly I'm lazy and it ruins your hair, plus curls are cool :) Does anyone know how to make your curls stay down, so my hair doesn't get poofy? Please don't tell me to blow dry it, cause it's gonna take too long. Please help :)

Hi! I have curly poofy hair too! It was the worst as a teenager. Fortunately you are in 2013 instead of 1980 and there are a bunch more hair products available to you. There are even curly shampoos and conditioners. No need to spend a fortune, just buy a loreal, pantene whatever. I recommend hair gel. Put it on when your hair is still wet.

I can't blow dry my hair that makes it really poofy.

Sometimes I put an elastic to kind of keep the top straight. You know a loose pony tail. I also recommend allure website & magazine, that has saved me a ton of money on products! Best wishes for your beautiful hair!

Experiment with different shampoos and conditioners. Some of them can help with this. I don't have this problem, but my best friend and 2 of her kids do. Once they find a brand of shampoo or conditioner that they like, they will pay anything it takes to keep it around.

I remember seeing a homemade hair get recipe either on this website or on OneGoodThing by Jillee, using a cornstarch base. Also, how about just running olive oil, coconut oil, or a leave-in conditioner through your hair? Also, would henna or some other natural coloring condition your hair without using a straightener? The olive oil or coconut oil would be the fastest daily solution if it works.

Another method might be to wet your hair, then pull into a tight ponytail so the hair dries straighter. Another method that might work is to get a haircut that uses a thinning comb; I'm not sure about this but it seems like it would reduce some of the volume, and these combs are available for the home haircut, too. I know you love your curls, but maybe you just feel your face is overwhelmed by them. I hope some of the Thriftyfun tips work for your beautiful curls.

Try putting in Moroccan Argon oil while your hair is still somewhat wet. I have very thick coarse hair and I do blow dry it, however, if you put in a little mousse and scrunch while using a diffuser attachment, I think that would work. The Argon oil makes my dull hair very shiny. Nothing ever worked like this for me. Good luck.

I too have the same problem. I use mousse. It really control the frizz and poofiness and leaves me really great curls.

My hair can be like that, too. If you want it to be more straight, you can go to the store and get some like.. straightening serum and just put it in after you wash you hair. Or you can try blow drying it and it will be straight/kind of wavy.
Hope I helped.

I got rid of a really bad perm once by using hair straightener. I recommend that if you use hair straightener that you style your hair as you want it to look when you apply it because it will stay that way when your done. (if you straighten it off to the side of your head it may end up wanting to do that after the product is removed.) I was warned by some black ladies (I am fair skinned) that it could damage my hair. I have very coarse hair and it was no problem for me. If you have very fine hair than you need to be very careful but usually curly hair isn't fair. Good luck!

You can divide your hair and put it on very wide curlers. A woman I know used to use empty, rinsed out aluminum cans on her hair after a bath. She'd come it out, pull it taunt and wrap it all until it dried. I think she also used bobby pins to hold the hair in place on her improvised rollers. It would be more wavy and less curly. You could also try braiding one thick braid to pull it down, it will still be very curly, but it will be less untamed, and possibly look more wavy than wooly when undone.

One of my friends has really curly and frizzy hair. She uses a product called Frizz-Ease. In the United States, I think you can buy it in discount stores like Walmart and Walgreens as well as an online store http://www.drugstore.com. I don't know anything about stores in India, though.

My daughter has very curly hair, she uses a curling iron. It doesn't take all the curl out but makes it wavy instead of the tight curls.

My hair is naturally curly and long. After shampooing and conditioning, it is still very tangled. What can I use to help with the tangles? I have tried several different kinds of detangler and they do not help at all. Help!

While in the shower comb the conditioner though your hair with a wide tooth comb before rinsing. It makes all the difference.
