Craft Project: Memorial Day Wreaths
Many years ago my mother-in-law taught me to make this wreath and this year I am making it for her.
Ice Cream Sundae Bar for Memorial Day
An easy dessert for your backyard Memorial Day gathering is to set up an Ice Cream Sundae "bar" with several varieties of ice cream, toppings, chopped candy bar and cookie pieces, whipped cream, and cherries, of course.
If you still get phone books that have the magnets stuck on them from businesses, save them! You can use them to make cute magnets.
Craft Project: All Year Memorial Craft
Keep Memorial Day in your thoughts all year! This a simple quilt to make and a nice display of loved ones. You can make a small wall hanging (as shown) or a full quilt. Fun for a beginner, novice or a great way to use your novelty fabrics!
Craft Project: Americana Wooden Wall Display
Take all those tiny wooden items you may have that are unpainted and give them an Americana theme to display in a group for Memorial Day and 4th of July.
Craft Project: Americana Lantern
Give your old Lantern a new look for your Memorial Day Celebration. This was an old rusty lantern that I gave new life to with an Americana Theme for Memorial Day and can be used as well for 4th of July.
Make Your Own Picnic Blanket for Less
I saw a picnic blanket at Walmart for $14.96. After carefully examining this blanket I have decided that it can be made for a lot less. Take a shower curtain liner (bought at DollarTree for $1) and an old but usable blanket and sew the liner to the blanket, add shoe string ties and a handle and WOW! a picnic blanket that has just cost maybe $3 total compared to the $15 at WalMart.
The unofficial kick off of summer - Memorial Day - will be here soon. Besides taking some time to remember all those who gave their lives in the cause of keeping our country free - which we all should do - Memorial Day calls for a picnic or backyard barbeque.
I planted these beautiful yellow flowers in 1999 when I got the news that my brother-in-law had cancer and was not going to survive. Every year when they bloom, I reflect back on the ones I have lost in my life. I added the American Flag last year when my son-in-law left for Iraq. Thankfully, my son-in-law is on his way home this week.
Losing a loved one is never easy. For those of us left behind, creating a living tribute in the form of a memorial garden offers us a place to grieve, reflect, and pay homage to our loved one's memory.
Preventing Silk Flowers from Fading in the Sun
The silk flowers I place on grave sites seem to fade very fast in the sun. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the colors stay brighter longer?
Protecting Silk Flower Arrangements for Gravesites
With Memorial Day soon approaching, I wanted to share this tip for silk flower arrangements. Spray with a couple coats of WD-40 to help repel water from rain and sprinklers, and to protect silk flowers' colors from fading due to sunlight. After spraying with WD-40, the silk flowers or greenery will stay beautiful and vibrant for a longer period of time while placed near your loved one's grave.
Table Linens for Fourth of July Parties
Instead of buying throwaway, light plastic tablecloths, spend a few dollars more and get a flannel-back table cloth (about $5) for seasonal parties. I got 3 of them for a 4th of July party a few years ago and bring them out every year for Memorial Day and the 4th of July.
Is the Price of Fuel Keeping You Home for the Holiday Weekend?
I was just wondering if the price of gasoline was pinching your budget so that this year you are not going to travel anywhere for Memorial Day Weekend or are staying closer to home than you normally do?

Memorial in the Garden - Heart and Tear Shaped Flower Beds
If you have a special person or pet you want to honor or remember, here is a design that I did in my garden. I made a heart design and a tear design by digging up the grass and making a flower garden and a shrub garden to honor someone special. It is in the shape of a heart and has a hemlock tree planted in it for the special person. Also I planted roses and flowers in the tear shape garden when I was sad. This also helps to deal with your sadness. You also have somewhere you can go and meditate. By Mary Jane
Painted Memorial Rock For Garden
Our son died in October and we made a small sitting area with a small maple tree, rock, monkey grass, and ceramics he had in his yard that we brought home. I painted a rock with a sweet saying in his memory - my 1st effort using acrylic paint and got instructions off the web. I plan to paint more. By Granny Annie
