Need Help With Home Repairs?

I live on $700 a month SSI. My trailer is completely falling apart. I have tree limbs falling on the top, so I have holes in my roof. I have windows that are leaky. I have vents for the heat, but only two work because of raccoons and other animals.

I desperately need energy efficient doors and windows with screens put in here, so I can afford my bills. My power bill has been $400 a month. I have emotional issues. I'm on nine medications. Medicaid only pays for four, and so five of them have to come out of my pocket. Anyone know where I can find an agency or organization that can help? Thank you.

Do you qualify for Medicare part D? All states have a department that is funded through the government and it is called different things in different states, and even by different names in the same state. It won't be located in small towns, but most nearby larger towns will have it. I assume you have a social worker through the Department of Social Services/Welfare Office. If you do talk to that person about it, they should know about this organization. A lot of places the organization is referred to as Opportunities for Independent Living(OIL). Here in SD, in one town it is called OIL, but where I live about 200 miles away it is called Independent Living Center. I have also heard of other towns where it is called Prairie Freedom Center.

If you can locate this place and qualify income wise there is a waiting list for money to come through and for them to find repair people that have time to do the repairs. From what I understand they don't have their own repair people, they hire people to do the repairs. After the repairs are made you have to stay in the house a certain number of years or else pay back the money they spent on your house on a pro-rated basis. This organization helps elderly and disabled low income people. That being said is your trailer worth repairing, from what all you said is wrong with it, I doubt it. Have you ever thought about applying for a HUD apartment, where the rent is based on about 30% of your income and the heat is figured in on the rent, so therefore you wouldn't have to pay for heating expenses. On your income, your rent including the heat would be about $210.00 a month, you would still have electricity, phone, etc. If you have a minister talk to him/her, sometimes they will take up a special offering for a needy member of the congregation.

I had a friend in this position; her trailer was too far gone to be fixed. She applied for and got an apartment for low income, disabled, or senior housing.

In out state, the Housing Authority takes care of this.
