My wife received a Janome/New Home Excel 23L from a friend. She loves it, however the stitch selector seems to randomly select stitches. It doesn't follow the stitch setting knob. I'm a computer repair technician and good with tools, is this something I could fix or should we take it to a professional?

Janome has a "contact us" customer service site that you can call for help on your machine:
The Janome "help" repair technician is a $40 charge before you even get to ask your question! what the heck!
The service manual for this vintage machine costs into the high three-digit range - and you'll need it to home-fix this machine. To the best of my knowledge (I do self-taught vintage machine repair for my sewing students here in Scotland) the service manual isn't available for free or low cost download. I send all of the computerised machine work onto a factory trained tech as it's all beyond my capabilities - as you already know, computerised anything repair isn't as simple as 'open 'er up and have a look'!
I have to say I think in this case you're best served taking the machine to a qualified tech even with your pre-existing computer repair skills. Ask if the tech will let you watch the repair, and doesn't mind 'teaching' you as he/she does the work. Most vintage sewing machine repair techs are very happy to share knowledge and willingly teach you what they know as they work on your machine - you will have the cost of the repair but you'll also have the knowledge for next time.
