| Getting Kids Involved In Garage/Yard Sales
By Jona E. Kessans
Spring is coming and now is the time make preparations for having a yard or garage sale. And, yes - this includes the kids too.
I know for me spring always meant upcoming garage/yards sales to go to with my mom, but more importantly those garage/yard sales I had with my mom. From these early experiences, I learned many valuable lessons that I use to this day. These include, the necessity of de-cluttering, finance, how to make change, how to price an item, how to organize and display items, and customer service. Thanks to my mom's help, I was able to engage in an entrepreneurial endeavor at the tender age of eight. I have fond memories of my many mini-business endeavors and feel that these ventures contributed to my desire and successes in owning my own business now. Here are some pointers to get your child involved in having a garage or yard sale of his or her own when you have one.

| Saving Buttons
I have a pal who cuts off all the buttons of old pieces of clothing that she's not able to donate or re-sell (stained). She keeps the buttons she thinks she'll use when making her own family's clothing. But the extra buttons, she accumulates in a see thru box stashed away. When she gets plenty, she bags them up in ziplocs and sells them at her yard sales for crafts.

| Sell Refreshments At Your Garage Sale
To make more money at your next yard sale, sell refreshments, too! Watch the sales for a few weeks before your event, and stock up on canned sodas at bargain prices. The day of the sale, put them in a cooler with ice and put up a big sign "cold drinks, .50" or whatever price lets you make a little profit, but keeps the price appealing.

| Tips for Throwing a Successful Garage Sale
1. Guerilla Advertising: Make lots of signs to post around your neighborhood before the morning of your sale. The sign should include your address (obvious yes, but easily forgotten!) and directional arrows pointing the way.. Printing them on bright colored paper or coloring them in makes them more attention grabbing. After the sale, be a good neighbor - remove and dispose of your signs.

| Bag Bargain Garage Sale
This is a little late for the garage sale issue, but if getting rid of clutter is your main reason for having a sale, Bag Bargains is the quickest and easiest way to accomplish this and make a little money, too. We have had great success with all the little items that accumulate in junk drawers, etc. Things like can openers and silverware, books, hair accessories, knick knacks, etc. Just put everything out in boxes...no need to sort. ...post a BIG sign that announces your price...We do 50 cents an item or $1.00 a bag, and have collected as high as $75.00 during a sale.

Signs are very important when throwing a garage sale. Make sure you signs have large and clear arrows so that they can be seen easily by drivers. And also make sure the date of the sale is visible. People often get discouraged looking for garage sales because there are so many old signs up from previous weeks. If it is clear to people that your signs are current they will be more likely to follow them. Please take your signs down when you are done : )
