Order Glasses Online

I needed new glasses. I went to an optical outlet that advertised glasses for $79.00. They examined my eyes for $39 which wasn't the greatest deal, but not too bad. I found out that I could have laser surgery for about $3000, which I can't afford, but is good to know. Anyway, the deal on glasses was buy one and get one free all for $79.

However, I was told that I would have to pay an extra $80 for those cheaper frames because I needed a stronger prescription. This made them more expensive than most of the other frames. I was given a final price of $545, and was told this was a great deal because the second pair was free. They would not cut the price down the middle so that I could just buy the one pair I needed. I asked for my prescription and took it home.

I went online and found that I could order the style of glasses I wanted online with polycarbonate Progressive lens- all the options for $138. Before I finalized the order I searched the net for a discount code and quickly found one that worked. It saved me $10 and the final price, including shipping, was $128. Quite a savings!

Note: If you buy online, you should have all of your measurements handy. I know that a nose bridge of 17-18 is comfortable for me, for example. Check the measurements on a comfortable pair of glasses you have tried on at a store or already own. The worst thing you can do is get glasses with too narrow a bridge. They will hurt your nose and even give you headaches. The measurement is usually printed on the inside of the frames.

For myself, I would never consider having any laser surgery on my eyes. What would happen if a serious mistake was made during the laser procedure, and I could be blinded for the rest of my life.

It sounds like a good idea to be able to get a good deal on line, by why take a chance. What would happen if you ordered the glasses online, then when they came in the mail, you tried them on and didn't like them. What would you do if they cut your prescription wrong? At least if you bought your pair of glasses from a local optical shop, you could have them regrind the lenses and make it right.

I made an appointment with America's Best and received a free eye exam and purchased two pair of glasses for $365.45. I also have the polycarbonate Progressive lenses. They also gave me two very nice eyeglass cases.

Sure I paid a little bit more money, but I have peace of mind.

I ordered from Zennoptical. I was very careful about measurements, especially measuring where pupil is while looking straight ahead. DH helped me with that. Next eye exam, the assistant checked the prescription. It was right on. I got progressive lenses too. Someone from the Thriftyfun community was pleased with their glasses from them. That's how I found out about their site. (06/26/2010)

I have just bought a pair of glasses from http://WWW.39dollarglasses.com for about $100 and love them. They would have cost me about $350 at my local eyedoctors. (06/26/2010)

Ordering online isn't for everyone, but I would have tried it. As long as you have all the measurements precisely recorded (that's the optician's job,) the cost savings is excellent. I wish online ordering had been available when I still needed glasses! (06/27/2010)

I agree, online is the way to go as long as you simply take good measurements and pay attention to the website's FAQ guides so you know you're measuring correctly and choosing frames of the right size. I ordered mine online from ZenniOptical and got absolutely perfect glasses. Next time I had an eye exam locally, they checked out my eyeglasses and said they were spot-on exactly like my prescription had been, and that they would have charged UP TO over $600 for the same glasses with fancy frames and extra features I'd bought for $80 to $90 at ZenniOptical. I'm about to order my next pair from them again in a few days and have no qualms about it.

Ordering them online is NOT for people who won't read the directions and take their time about choosing frames well, but if you're careful, it's a worthwhile savings. After all, right now my only choice is not having new eyeglasses because I can't afford even 'making do' with cheap ones locally, or getting new affordable ones online. But, well, if I still had the money like I once did before I got sick and went broke, I'd still go for the savings. Living on less has been a great learning experience! (06/27/2010)
