To make a magnetic puzzle for traveling, use a cookie sheet and stick a magnet onto the back of all the puzzle pieces in the box.
Schedule for Front Seat Riding
My 3 grandchildren used to argue as to who would sit in the front seat. I devised a schedule so that everyone will know when it is their turn to sit in the front seat of the car. This schedule changes after going to each destination.
Sometime before the trip, without letting your kids know, pack a small bag or sack with all kinds of "fun" things, whatever you can find that will keep them busy and that won't be really messy.
Games to Play With Kids While Driving
We had several games the kids enjoyed playing when they were younger and we were traveling. Most included winning money!
My granddaughter's car seat was passed to me from their car and I thought UGH - it needed a bath. I have my own seats for them and keep them clean the same way. On a warm or hot day, I use the garden hose with a good spray attachment.
When my daughter was small and still in a car seat, I purchased one of those nap mats used in kindergarten to place under the car seat in my car. It helped protect the car from spills, dropped food, spit up or what ever.
Ask Your Kids "Are We There Yet?"
Out of sheer frustration of going on long trips, I once decided to beat my daughter to the punch and asked her 10 minutes into the trip, "Honey, are we there yet?" She got SO flustered and short-wired that she didn't ask me that question for the rest of the trip!
Packing Kids For Multi Day Trips
When my son (early teens) went away on a church mission trip, I was worried that he would wear mismatched clothes or wear the same pair of socks for several days. You know how young boys are.
Use Fitted Bassinet Sheet to Keep Car Seat Cool
Here's an a-ha use for a white fitted bassinet sheet your child has outgrown: cover her dark car seat with it (while the car is parked) to keep it cool! A bassinet sheet fits nicely over a bigger kid's seat.
Hitting the road with the kids means hours in the car listening to them complain about being bored. Well, never fear the old games we used to play are still around and to top it off you can create some new car fun. Who needs the car video player or hand held games?
I have kids who sometimes have trouble knowing how much shampoo to use. I have gotten several single use shampoo samples in the mail that I am now saving for when they go to church camp this summer.
I need some ideas to keep a 5 year old boy occupied on a long vacation trip. He doesn't really like to color, etc. and has a pretty short attention span. I've been checking the clearance aisles in stores, but I'm not coming up with much. Any ideas? I'd sure appreciate it!
