Pets Drinking the Christmas Tree Water

Don't let pets drink from the Christmas tree stand. Preservatives can be toxic, and so can pine sap.

It's the first time I hear about this problem. Why would you water a Christmas tree? In my country, Christmas trees are sold with a log with a hole to insert the foot of the tree or a cross made of two pieces of wood held together by a nail which you hammer into the foot of the tree and that's all, we do not have any system to water the Christmas tree. We are careful not to put the Christmas tree in direct sunlight or near a heater or in a room with significant temperature differences, just like we would do for any green plant. The log which is used as a foot can be used afterwards in the garden for decoration or kept for the next Christmas tree.

Hope this helps!

I've never seen a tree in a log like that. In the U.S., we usually have tree stands that have a basin for water. Here's a picture of my tree stand right now, we water it every morning.

Maybe we water them because it's common to put up a Christmas tree on Thanksgiving weekend (4th Thursday in November) and a cut tree would have lost a lot of its needles by then.

You could cover the water with nylon net.

Even if you only add plain water, the bacteria that builds up can make your pet very sick, as can the numerous substances that wash off of the tree. Fir is also mildly toxic to pets and the irritant oils may wash into the "plain" water. Keep the tree water dish covered at all times.
