I'm looking for directions. A longtime ago I read of how to soak pine cones in a "solution" of Alum? And the pine cones would give off beautiful colors when burned. I'd appreciate some ideas Thanks.
Go to http://www.christmas-activities.com/ and click on "colored burning pine cones". It's all there. Have fun! (10/22/2004)
It isn't a good idea to burn pine cones in a fireplace. They give off creosote, a sticky substance that will stick to the inside of your chimney and can cause chimney fires. (10/23/2004)
I don't want to disagree with the previous advice, but we have been using pine cones for years as many of our neighbors have for starters in our woodstoves. We use the stovepipe cleaning log every fall to clean the pipe. Here is a site that clears up the point of pine cones being safe. They recommend using them http://www.safesidechimney.com/enjoy.htm Here is a site that tells how to give different color when they burn www.spazzticcrafts.com (12/10/2009)
