Preventing Glitter from Falling Off Clothing?

November 3, 2019

Gold Foil Decorations Coming Off Disney TutuI bought my daughter this cute outfit from Costco; it's a Disney princess tutu and shirt. After wearing it for a couple of hours I noticed that my floor was full of little pieces of gold glitter looking things. I didn't pay that much attention to it since it was late at night. To my surprise it was the gold foil decoration that was on the tutu. And now the tutu has only half of an Aladdin magic lamp, Cinderella's slipper is also missing a piece of foil. How can I stop it from coming off the tutu? As soon as she sits or rubs against something some foil comes off. I was thinking of just adding a layer of Mod Podge on top of the foil in order to avoid further damage. Here are some pictures so you guys can get an idea. Any tips are appreciated.

You are at a good start, Michael's carry Mod Podge for fabric for $7.99.You can also down load coupon for better price. And sense you have a little one you can have this fabric podge on hand for future pieces and projects. This saves you money on many levels!

Some people swear by hair spray to help keep stuff from falling off glittery clothing. I think it makes the a fabric tacky and smells bad, but I am very sensitive. Also it would need to be applied after each washing (as would just about any treatment).

I would be the one taking the item back to Costco and asking for a refund because of shoddy workmanship, but I am sure your daughter is totally into the item and that is not an option.

You could always try writing a letter to the maker and asking them to pay for the hairspray if you go that route. Modge podge seems much too goopy and gloppy for your intended purpose.

Post back with an update!

First off I would go back to Costco and ask for a new one. Once you get home it is a good time to add the Mod Podge to the glitter items so they do not fall off again. Replace the item first so it looks nice.

The add the Mod Podge to the glitter to protect it. This way it can last a lot longer and she can enjoy wearing it around the house.

I bought my daughter a Disney princess tutu and started noticing that the foil decorations on it where falling off. I went to the store and returned it because I thought it might have been a faulty one. I came home with a new one and added Mod Podge Fabric-Tissu-Tela..? and I only managed to do about half the tutu and kinda gave up.

Why did I have to repair something that the companies should have thought about. Then this past Christmas my mother gave her Hello Kitty dresses with foil decorations all over it. And now I just do not know how to avoid the foil from falling besides just storing them away. Please help.

Unfortunately there is no good way to prevent the foil stuff from coming off. I see this same complaint among many moms/dads. One mom, I can't remember where I saw this..but she suggested making your own flashy decorations by buying plain items and using silver or gold thread and an embroidery sewing machine.

Not everyone has that luxury of a fancy machine, but you could probably get the same effect by cutting shapes from net and use a high density zigzag stich to applique them on.

Is there a way to stop glitter from coming off evening gown? There is a spiral type design with glitter on it throughout the gown. After getting up from sitting, there is glitter all over the chair. I've only worn the gown once because of this problem.

When I was little in dance, they sprayed hairspray on our costumes to keep the glitter on. Maybe that would help?

Thank you Corrie for your suggestion. I'm going to see Phantom of the Opera in Oct and want to wear this gown, but I don't want to leave glitter everywhere! I'm going to try your suggestion at home first. Thanks again.

If you are careful, you can try to put clear nail polish on. But be care of the fabric.

If you have already lost a lot of glitter on your gown, you go to a fabric shop, Lowe's any kind of craft shop. You can buy glitter glue for fabric in different color's and just repair the gown. This way you do not have to worry about hurting the material. Although I will have to remember Dyan's idea.

I am into crafts and that just might come in handy. Thanks Dyan! And Pikkymama you will love the Phantom of the opera! My daughter and I saw it in Toronto and it was just wonderful. I would love to see it again. I do not have to tell you have fun. I already know you will! darlene

Thank you Dyan and Darlene both for your suggestions. I haven't lost a lot of glitter - it falls off a little when I walk and leaves a little glitter behind after sitting. The design is thin spiral type lines with glitter throughout the gown. I can hardly wait to see Phantom - I heard it was excellent. We're going to Las Vegas to see it. I have worn out the VHS already from watching the movie so much! I now have it on DVD. Thank you for telling me how much you enjoyed it Darlene. It'll be fun. Pikkymama

Is there a fixative for fabric to keep glitter from falling off excessively? I have a mother-of-the groom dress with an empire waist. The cloth above the waist has glitter threads throughout. It sheds glitter easily.

A friend suggested I buy a fixative to spray on it to keep most of the glitter from falling off. I have a few concerns: 1) would the white cloth turn yellow? 2) would the fabric feel tacky after the fixative dries? 3) would sewing alterations be made difficult, or would the needle on the sewing machine become gummed up?

I would spray it with hair spray, you can't see it and a dry cleaning can take it out of the material IF you are concerned about it. Good luck!

How about spraying a little unscented hairspray on it? You can always spray a light cologne to get rid of the alcohol smell in it. And it Is sticky & cheap! Good Luck. : )

I've been reading about putting decoupage glue on items after you glitter them - tools, etc. Should work on shoes! Let me know if you try it?

I wore my sister's dress to homecoming. It's the type of dress that has glitter all over and sparkles. But when I was dancing, a lot of the glitter came off of the butt and I have no idea how to fix it. Does anyone know a way to fix a dress like that?

I don't think there is anything that can be done about this. Had the dress been worn before? More than likely the glitter came off from sitting, instead of dancing. To me, it would be natural for glitter to come off in areas where it is rubbed.

September 28, 20110 found this helpful

I think you just might save the day with a bit of fabric glue lightly brushed on the areas where the glitter is gone. Use extra fine glitter and gently dust it over the glue and let it dry. This just might work but of course when wearing any garment the glitter is bound to come off. There is also a fabric glue especially for glitter that can be purchased at the craft stores. I've used this method when painting and dec orating sweat shirts and it's worked well. There are many colors and types of glitter so choose carefully to get as close a match as possible.

Those are the two best ways. Wash gently and dont use hot water, which will loosen the glue.
