Punk Rock Birthday Party Ideas

My daughter is turning 14 and she is a Punk Rocker. I was thinking of inviting her friends over and we could hang outside and listen to music, but other than that I don't know what to do. Please help with ideas. She wouldn't like a pamper party or a luau party, she has grown out of those things.

Hey, I will be turning 14 soon and all of my friends are punks,or punk rockers. What you can do is take all of the friends to the mall to shop at Hot Topic and get some clothes, and then go home and put some rock or punk music on and have a guitar cake for dessert. Or instead of the Hot Topic trip you could go before hand to the thrift store or ebay and pick up a ton of punk like clothing and have them either pick out of the clothes and make they're own outfit, or they could make cool purses out of them while listening to music (make sure while purchasing the clothes that you get funky jewelry). That would be cool to do, and I would be surprised. Or you could ask her what she'd like to do and maybe have her plan the party.

Why don't you talk to you daughter - don't get too carried away though. If she is at a stage where she is very concerned about what her peers think the whole parents, fancy cake, and way out decorations may be considered a little immature.

I'd let them loose outside, have their favorite foods and their loud punk music (warn the neighbors first if it is going to be really loud or late), and get you daughter to pick out some DVDs to watch (then she can't complain if they're not 'right') when it gets late.

One of the best presents is probably knowing when to leave them alone. Teenagers will want you around for opening presents, taking a couple of happy snaps and serving the food and that's about it! (04/20/2005)

I think having all her friends over is a great idea. All they need is some food and music and they will be so happy. (08/16/2006)

I just posted this for help for my own daughter's birthday. Maybe yours might like the idea?

Hello! My daughter is turning 16 this April and I am trying to come up with ideas, too. My daughter is not the frilly pink princess and bows type. She loves classic rock, hanging out with her friends (both guys and girls) and surfing. We already did the" luau" thing two years ago so I'm looking for something different. A lot of her friends are seniors this year so she doesn't want a "tacky" themed party, yet I need to have some direction so I can decorate!

We thought of "Mardi Gras'' but she is not too thrilled with that idea. All of the rock and roll stuff I find is more geared towards the 50's and not the 80's rock that she prefers.

The only idea that I can really settle on is a Chinese new year theme. Oriental trading company has some really cool looking black, red, and gold party ware with Chinese fortune symbols and dragons on them. I figured several platters of Chinese food would be fairly inexpensive. We could hang Chinese lanterns around the covered patio. There were some really cool favors like chop sticks, fortune telling sticks, fortune fish, and flashing dragon pins available at the same site. There were also some really neat kimono invitations and silk looking boxes and stuff too.

I'm stuck when it comes to activities though. The last thing she will want is anything that appears childish. And I also need to incorporate her classic rock in somehow. Was Yoko Ono Chinese? :)

I welcome any suggestions!
Thanks,
Cheryl

I was definitely not into punk when I was turning 12 but it's been many years past. I'm planning a punk birthday party for my boy and I think you can apply many of the same things.

Make your own party favors. Someone suggested ripping up old clothes and safety pinning together, buy some zippers as well. There are also a lot of bead stores that sell things like anchors and skull and cross bones that you could have the kids make into earrings or pins.

Remember punk is really about DIY. Maybe get some old punk classics to play on the boom-box. Or to make it really easy put them on an ipod, that way you don't have to worry about the music all night. Sure it'd be cool if you could get a band to play (most local punk bands will do this for free or for food and drink).

Decorations? Black, Black, Black.

Maybe a black frosted cake with white lettering, and some strawberry filling that will ooze out.

Think horror, black and fluorescent colors, stripes, bowling. I know kids are real into video games now a days. Guitar hero competition anyone? Or karaoke with punk songs.

Good luck. (04/09/2007)

Well, great question. My daughter is turning 12 next month and I am preparing a "Punk Rock" party. All her friends like different types of music so I will have them all bring there favorite CD's to the party. So anything involved with music. We have Twister Moves and Karaoke. Also a great one is Dance Dance Revolution. Girls and Boys like these. We will be having a scavenger hunt and doing games, like putting up a poster of her favorite boy band (My Chemical Romance) and having the girls be blindfolded and kiss the pic with either Lipstick or stick on a cutout pair of lips (this is still undecided). Who ever gets the closest to his lips wins the poster ;) This is a Slumber party as well, so there will be movies, popcorn and fun.

Have them all dress as Punk as they want. Have a good time. Some as my daughter will dress as she always does, and others this will be a change. It's all in good fun. Did this help? (09/21/2007)

I'm a mom of twin goth-ish daughters, age 12. Music (loud), food (lots of it), and movies (her choice). Maybe go to Hot Topic for party favors like stickers, earrings, etc. They have great sales. Also if she's up for it, hand out scary temp hair colors. You're a good mom! Have fun! (01/20/2008)

Okay, if your daughter likes the "pop" punk bands, let her pick a local band that can play at her party. Make sure there is tons of food, let her invite as many friends as she wants, and let the kids feel like they are unsupervised---even if you are there keeping an eye out. Don't do anything to embarrass her.

If she likes this music, forget hot topic or any store like that. Get her a sewing machine or sewing kit, and help her rip up those band shirts into cute halter tops, tank tops, tube tops etc. Get her some makeup, bright red lipstick, fishnets, and neon colored high heels. (01/28/2008)

I am looking for ideas for my daughter's 13th bithday party, and this site has been great with the ideas, especially reminding me that she probably won't want me hovering (I love hovering). Also for the ones who want to get technical, my daughter will tell you that her style can't be categorized, she likes 80's music, Fall Out Boy, The Ramones, and German and French bands, oh and John Legend (?). Actually, she just recently removed Fall Out Boy from her ipod and I miss them.

Her dress isn't outlandish, well except for the spiked collar (I'm still trying to get use to it) and a lot of black and red. Regardless of the music or the clothes she is very bright, independent, and loving. My focus and hers is not on whether or not she is emo, punk, poser, or "other". She's not perfect, but she's a good kid and I want her to enjoy her 13th, I'll see which of these suggestions she likes. (04/07/2008)

I suggest a simple party. Blast the music and let them dance until they're numb, kool-aid, movies, and silly spray!
Just be chill, don't hover or talk to the guests in an overly zealous tone, it's creepy. Just try not to drive yourself insane trying to rent out a skull and cross bone bounce house. DIY party favors would be rad. Ask them what they want before you give yourself a brain hemorrhage, lol. I've had a birthday party in an empty parking lot riding shopping carts and drowning myself in soda with my friends, and let me tell you that's way more fun than playing dress up (but maybe that's just me, I don't know). I'm not a 'punk' as you so succinctly put it, but I know what I would want: records. 8-track tapes. Cassettes, even. Something like the Clash, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Adverts, the Alarm, Generation X and Billy Idol. Or a guitar or bass so I can learn to play like my favorite musicians. Or paint. Lots and lots of acrylic paint with which to 'decorate' things. But that's gifts. Usually for a party all you need is the people.

For my last birthday, we all just trampled into my room and sat. We talked about the worlds' most pressing enigmas: life, death, and sports. We took paper and wrote things back and forth, like 'notes.'

And thrift stores are awesome. Flea markets, antique shops are neat. I'm always bugging my mom to take me to places like that, and yet she insists on going to frilly boutique-type shops. Please don't do that. Let her decide what she wants. Although she's probably already had her birthday and is ready for her next one by now. (08/18/2008)

Okay, well I have learned from experience that having a small amount of people in a BIG area is definitely not a good idea. You have to create a vibe and therefore have everyone relatively close together. Play some good music through an amp and keep parents as far away as possible (no offense). Trust me, you do not want your mum or dad coming in and dancing with you (it isn't a good sight!).

If you want it to be a punk rock party don't give it a theme, proper punk rockers will dress up as something cool anyway. Do not have too much control over the people at the party. Let them do their own thing rather than have things planned for them the entire time. And my biggest tip would be to not worry too much about other people having a good time. Just think about it as if it were someone else's party!

Hope it helps. Good luck! (12/07/2008)
