Refreezing Hot Dogs

Can I refreeze hot dogs which have been defrosted by soaking in hot water?

As far as safety, I'd say it depends on how long they sat in the hot water and how much bacteria collected in that time. If it were me, I'd only risk it if they were defrosted for less than an hour, and they probably won't taste the same anyway. They may have freezer burn after refreezing.

My mom worked in the main office of Safeway in the meat department back in the 80s and answered questions from people calling about refreezing meat all the time. It's not true that once meat has been defrosted that it can't be refrozen. It usually can if it hasn't been defrosted for very long. (12/30/2008)

I wouldn't trust anything defrosted with out cooking it first. Then refreeze it. It's not worth getting sick over! (01/05/2009)

No, not unless you want to take a chance on being sick. (01/05/2009)

I'm not dead yet! Once something is thawed, whatever degree of bacteria that grew is the degree that it would have when it was re-frozen. If it was done shortly afterward, I've never had a problem. They are full of nitrates and wouldn't go bad as quickly as fresh meat. (01/06/2009)

Let's just say first off most people have the misconception that hot dogs are already pre-cooked in the package before you get them sausages are not cooked doesn't work out the same way for those with hot dogs if you're somewhere before between 4 degrees and 0 degrees you can store them indefinitely as long as the package was never opened and it's in a dark place Frozen and with sausages I usually give it no longer than maybe a month but still won't get you sick if you wait another month before opening the package and cooking them what freezing does a stop bacteria from living there no more bacteria can live in there and the bacteria that is there will die so what you're really dealing with when you freeze something is the outer skin claiming the most bacteria if you boil or fry that hot dog then all the bacteria will be killed which is a lot less than hot dogs that were in the refrigerator for two weeks now for hamburgers on the other hand I have porous text her what you do with hamburgers you just store them raw hand padded or in a big chunk makes no difference you can store them practically indefinitely especially if you stack them with wax paper in between where there's less air to get to the actual meat that's divided I've cooked hamburger meat that was 6 months old with no problems did lose a little bit of flavor freshness but never got me sick you're trying to avoid freezer burn and things like this that are dead giveaways where the flavor would die or discoloration with meet
