Remedy for Acne

I have a 21 year old daughter who has severe acne and hair on her face. We've tried dermatologists, Proactive solution, etc., but I can't afford it anymore, especially when she doesn't use it consistently.

I need some advice on what natural products I can give her to help with this terrible acne that has haunted her for the past 10 years of her life and made her miserable.
Something that really works please!

The symptoms you describe are present in PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). I strongly urge your daughter to see a doctor and be evaluated for PCOS. I suffered with acne all my life, there is no easy fix. I eventually took Accutane, a controversial medication which helped me tremendously. If your daughter doesn't follow through using the meds or products, she will not have improvement. Another option is to look into getting birth control pills as this often improves acne. Good luck. I was going to say the same thing, PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome or disease). I've been lucky to avoid much facial hair (a few plucks here or there has taken care of anything), but I understand the acne from PCOS. It's not easy to take care of, and over the counter meds (as well as Pro-active) are really useless.

It's getting your illness under control that helps with getting your acne under control. I'd urge her to see her gynecologist and get treated right away, if left untreated, sterility among other ovarian problems can be the result. Good luck. (09/26/2010)

Well, I was going to say have her evaluated for PCOS, but I see two others beat me to it. The increased hair growth along with the acne was the big tip-off. As far as her acne, of course treating the PCOS (if that's what she has) should really help, but a very good and inexpensive product is Phisoderm. Phisoderm is a salicylic acid based product. You can buy 3 big bottles on Amazon.com for very little and it's wonderful. I don't have acne, but I use this all over my body in the shower and it keeps down and clears up any blemishes and makes my skin really smooth. It also has a very nice, mild, scent. Good luck. I have had really bad acne from medical machines. I've tried everything as well and I have found the best remedy of acne removal ever. It's called Stridex, weird name, but it works the best. You can find it at Walmart or Walgreen's. (09/28/2010)

A prescription called Accutane works really well, but it is imperative she NOT become pregnant while on it, as it can cause birth defects. And since your daughter doesn't seem to be willing to care for her acne, let her cope with this issue. Mommy needs to step back and let her take responsibility for herself. (09/28/2010)

My best solutions are c-vitamin based skin cream for day/night use and Visibly Clear 2 in 1 (by Neutrogena) and use it for mask 2-4 times a week. Do not use face scrubs.

I use colloidal silver. It works great! Just use it like an astringent as soon as you see or even feel a blemish. The sooner the better. It may take time for it to work on full blown acne, but keep using it daily (morning and night) until your skin clears up. Then use it as needed to keep your skin free of blemishes. (09/29/2010)

There are several things that have helped my son. First, he took a product called AlkaCleanse from Best Process (Morter Health System) and also the probiotic from the same company. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of that one. Our doctor said it is a good idea to take a bottle of each once a year.

There is also Nature Rich Mineral soap that has helped a great deal. You must use it in conjunction with the Nature Rich Fortified Mineral Gel: otherwise, the acne will get worse. You wash your face then put the gel on. The bottles are about $20 each, but last a very long time.

The last thing is a microfiber wash cloth from Norwex. It is a Canadian company. I have my son lather the mineral soap on his face and then use the cloth. It really works well. Some people have luck just using the cloth. You can get a pack of 3 cloths for around $20. (09/29/2010)

I don't know about the hair growth part, but I had a lady tell me years and years ago (I'm 61 now) to use zinc oxide on a blemish as soon as it started. I usually only had one at a time, so it was no big deal, but it worked. It would just go away, mostly with one application. If she has really bad acne all over her face, she might want to add some light lotion to the zinc oxide to be able to spread over a large area. Zinc oxide is the base ingredient in diaper rash medicine if you can't find it alone. You could probably call some pharmacies and see if they carry just the base product. I still get a pimple once in a blue moon and just use it. A small amount goes a long way, so you can always share it out among friends. (10/02/2010)

I agree with OliveOyl and the others who recommend that your daughter be evaluated for a medical condition such as PCOS. Having had terrible acne as a teenager, I feel great empathy for your daughter. My own acne cleared up during my freshman year at university after a doctor at the student health center prescribed birth control pills for me, not for birth control, mind you, but for the acne. It was such a relief to have the acne gone! It was embarrassing and depressing to have severe acne as a young woman. Unlike your daughter, I was not fortunate enough to have my mother advocate for me. I had to wait until that kind doctor provided the help I needed and changed my skin and outlook on life. Please do continue to help your daughter get the help she needs. I wish you both well.
