Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I need tips on to get rid of cat pee! Especially the smell, but I want to get rid of the smell so that my cat does not smell it and pee again! I heard vinegar works, but has anybody actually tried it? I'm afraid that we might have to get rid of him if he doesn't stop, because we're installing new hard wood flooring, but I also heard they stop with that too. HELP!

There are commercial products you can buy at the Pet Store (not supermarket). One product that is not expensive is called Nature's Miracle and works very well. I have several cats and rescue cats, etc. I had a male cat who had "behavioral issues" and would spray. This especially is a very nasty smell and does not go away without treatment. The above listed product worked beautifully. Also, if your kitty is "peeing" where is should not be there are usually two main reasons why - #1 reason the cat is not fixed - having your cat neutered or spayed frequently alleviates cats from spraying or marking their territory, # 2 have your kitty checked out by vet to make sure it doesn't have a urinary tract infection. (My kitty who was spraying unfortunately had behavioral issues and had to be put on an anti depressant! This issue stemmed from the fact that I had added new cat to the household.)

Hope this helps.

Vinegar12/16/2005
I use vinegar for everything as it does not remove the color from rugs, leaves a clean fresh scent with a perfume scent like other products. When my cat started using other than his litter box I tried different litters until I found one he would use which was the Arm and Hammer one. Cats do not like perfumes, litter is perfumed for people not the cat and they resent this. Some cats need two litter boxes, one for the pee and one for the other especially if the litter box is not cleaned immediately after use. Vinegar, used at full strength, removes the odor, the stain and not the color and is not harmful to the pet or children.

Nature's Miracle12/17/2005
I have 3 cats and 2 dogs with another cat currently at my dads while I live with my mom who also has 2 cats. The only products we have found to work are Nature's Miracle and OUT. The reason they work is because they are good bacteria that eat up the germs. Once dry we sprinkle borax on top and vacuum. We have found this works for dogs and cats. My mom's one cat refuses to use the litter box and its not that she is sick with a UTI or anything, its just that she is stubborn. She has been this way since a kitten. But we have found the only way to get the scent out and make her not return to her usual spots are the above products I mentioned. We have the automated Littermaid litter box and she still doesn't seem to be happy with it.

Before we got the automated litter box we had another cat that would go out of the litter box as well and it was because she didn't like the feeling of others bathroom. But now she likes the litter box because its ALWAYS clean. So think of that as an option. If they pee in there cat beds or things of the such, soak with laundry detergent and borax. It may take a few days of soaking, but it will get the smell out. Another cleaner that may work is the Oxygen cleaner that you mix with warm water. Good luck! I know my boyfriend and I have had it all happen to us!

I use "anti icky poo" spray... It worked so well, that I ordered 3 gallons *lol*.

They are kind of pricey, but I'm very happy with the product. I just moved, so I had problems with one of my cat adjusting. In the end, I realized it's easier to keep him in 1 room where I can monitor him. After he's good in this room, then I'll let him out little by little.(b)(/b)(b)(/b)

Vinegar and Baking Soda04/28/2006
Vinegar works the best and if you don't like the smell, wait one day. It lingers off but that's also why I like to mix baking soda into the mix. Not to make it explode but with half vinegar and half water mix a couple table spoons of baking soda. It will help get rid of all the smell. It cleans well with no odor left. Remember to wait till it dries. It's the best thing. My cat has never peed in that spot since. He likes the tub now...
