Removing Odor from Shoes

How do you get your shoes to stop smelling?

Place them in a plastic bag with some uncooked coffee, making sure the coffee doesn't touch the shoes. Leave overnight. It also helps if you don't wear the same shoes every day. (01/23/2010)

Getting shoes thoroughly dry between wearings seems to be the key; bacteria need moisture. Never wear the same shoes two days in a row if you can help it. Your shoes will last more than twice as long.

Avoid purchasing shoes made of man-made materials. Most do not "breathe" and are much better breeding grounds for bacteria.

If shoes are washable, run them through the washer with a rinse of vinegar to kill existing germs. Or else try misting the inside with vinegar and let dry (in sun if possible). You are out to kill the bacteria, not mask the smell with perfume. Vinegar odor evaporates and does not return.

Sunlight helps because not only does it dry the shoes out, but the UV helps sanitize them. The freezing step mentioned is an interesting suggestion that is new to me, but sounds practical, too.

The kitty litter in a sock or nylon helps dry shoes out, too. The crystal (silica gel) type is what I like. (01/28/2010)

This is so easy and cheap. Just wad up some newspaper and put in the shoes. Keep in overnight and the next day they should be odor free. Repeat if necessary. (01/28/2010)

I wipe out the insides of mine with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or square. (01/30/2010)
