Repairing Tears on Microfiber Furniture

October 4, 2019

I sliced the arm of our microfiber love seat. Is this something I can repair or do I need to find a shop to repair the cut?

Depending on the size of the cut, they do sell patch repair kits. You may be able to sew or fabric glue.

A photo may be able to help.

If the repair doesn't look as nice, you could also buy a sofa cover, or a blanket or pillow could cover it up.

You might be able to take a piece from the back or bottom and put a patch underneath the cut.

Thanks for posting a photo. A patch may be your best bet since it is so large. Talk to the folks at one of the big box sewing/craft stores so you can find the right product in the right color.

Since this is such a long cut you may wish to try two methods.
There are two methods and both will work but most likely, neither one will look very good.
Either method will require a visit to a large sewing/craft store like Michael's or JoAnn's as you will need to pick up your supplies before you begin your repairs.

Many people use the sewing method which will repair the cut but may not be very pretty.

If you decide to go with a patch repair kit (fusible web) this may require a trip to more than one store to find the closest color match. Be very sure to completely read directions before you begin and follow through without omitting a step.

I would go under the chair and find some excess material that is at the bottom. Cut off some small pieces and get some fabric glue. You will need to place the pieces under the cut and glue them in place. You may still see the cut but it will help it from ripping more.

Just wondering if you found out a way to repair your hole because our bulldog just did the same to our couch. Thanks either way for the help.

Lol....maybe there is some correlation between dogs and microfiber furniture because my dog, who is still a puppy, chewed 2 holes in our microfiber couch and loveseat. I should wrap her chew toys with microfiber, maybe she would chew on them!

Seems like you might want to invest in training before a new or fixed couch.

I just bought my sofa a week ago and noticed a tiny hole in it today. It is leather look microfiber. Is there any way to fix it? I got insurance on it, but hate to use it for such a small hole. Any suggestions?

Use the insurance! Thats what it is for.

Was the hole there when you purchased or do you know for sure? since it is only one week old, I would suggest asking the store where purchased to fix it or replace the sofa.

  • I do not know how conspicuous the hole is or where it is located but I do not believe you can completely remove all appearance of the hole. Remember, you will be "patching" a hole and I do know that sometimes these "fixes" are not as strong as claimed and some may eventually loosen and may become a bigger hole.
  • If the company or the insurance company do the repair then it would be guaranteed for at least 90 days (maybe more).
  • Here is a site that tells the most common way to do repairs (this says burn hole but it works the same):

I would check with the store first. They may offer to replace it.

A diy repair may make the situation worse and could invalidate the insurance. If the store won't help, invoke the insurance as that is what it is to be used for. Good luck!

I have a microfiber couch that has a rip in the seat cushion. The hard part is the cushion is attached to the couch and won't come up so I cannot just put a piece of fabric under it. Any suggestions for what I can do? Also what should I use?

Not sure if this would be what you're looking for, but seems as though it might work: Heat n Bond. You should test it on a piece of scrap fabric first, before using it on your sofa, but it looks as though this wouldn't be too noticeable.

You can use fray check to make sure the holes don't get bigger. Then darn the holes closed with matching thread.

Nothing available that just told me what I wanted to know. Plenty of suggestions as to where I can purchase velvet and even how to sew it when making up a garment but NOTHING on how to repair a tear.
